Olympic Torch Special Event Station

Geoff Harris

开云体育

Gentlemen,
?
1: As you may be aware, the Olympic Torch passes through Maidstone on Thursday 19th July. As it goes around the UK, the WAB Group (Worked All Britain) are holding special event stations in the area through which it passes, and hope to cover as much of the route as possible.
?
2: Several members of the club have shown interest in participating in this, so I have registered our Club with the WAB group to take part on the day using the call sign G3WM. I have received official notification and the call log-book to confirm our registration. I have spoken to Leslee and booked the hut for the day, so no problems there!
?
3: Ideally, at least 6 members are required, bearing in mind the operators, loggers, rest periods etc. I already have 4 people who wish to take part, although one is subject to being able to get the day off work (no problem for those of us who are retired!). However, the more the better, but we only have 6 weeks to get prepared!
?
4: Remember, this event is not until Thursday 19th July, so you have plenty of time to sort-out your diary’s!
?
5: These are highly-prestigious stations; having listened (and made contact with) several stations, they are very busy indeed – usually lots of pile-ups - because people actually want to log a contact with the operating stations each day.
?
6: If you are interested, will you please let me know so I can ensure we will do our club proud on the day. Because the stations can get very busy, if we’re not prepared, it can cause problems in dealing with the amount of traffic generated; we will need to keep calm at all times and ensure we are in control rather than letting aggressive callers dictate the running. Consequently, I hope to use a few of our meetings as training evenings at the hut in order to ensure we are up-to-speed with our operation procedures.
?
7: We will need HF and VHF radios (2 mtrs), so its a good excuse to get our all our equipment back in the hut and ensure its all working OK.
?
8: Please do think about joining us on the day – most of us will never get this chance again, will we? It will be an invaluable experience for some of the newer members to experience.
?
9: Please let me know in the next week or so if you’re interested, as I need to know that we have enough members to host this interesting Special Event Station.
?
10: Unfortunately, I will not be at the club next Monday, but should be able to make the meeting after.
?

I will not parcipitate in this event nor offer any assistance with this.

Members of the club will have to arrange for the aerial work to be finshed, The club power supply will need to be replaced or repaired before this.

The more important event before this is VHF field day on the 7th and 8th july, this should be our piroty not this "torch" event.

Nobody I have spoken to has expressed a interest in the Torch event and I feel it should have gone to Committiee before being made a Club event.

We should be putting our efforts into VHF Field Day and making a name for the Club. That is Less than 4 Weeks away and at the Moment seems very iffy that we will make a entry.

Ian,

Thank you for your contribution, albeit extremely negative. Whilst you might not necessarily wish to take part in this event, many other club members do, so that’s the end of that. I am disappointed to discover that the club PSU is no good – why has nobody ever been informed about this? The club has a lot of equipment that has been purchased over the years, yet it seems every time someone wants to use it, its either lost, stolen (what a joke??), no good or nobody can remember who last had it. I think its now time for members who have club equipment in their possession? to bring everything back to the hut; no club equipment should be stored at Capel, as it’s not the club premises, and the members can’t use what rightfully belongs to them because it’s locked-up 30 miles away!
?
This issue needs addressing urgently. I am therefore requesting that all members who have club equipment in their possession please bring it back to the hut so we can check the inventory and publish a club asset register. It is not right that club equipment is stashed-around in people’s houses when new members would like to be able to use it – then when they do, we’re told it’s no good anyway! We now have a lockable cupboard to store the equipment in, so I would be grateful if you could start by bringing back the 2mtr rig you have at home, as this will be needed for the Torch event.

I have informed many people, many times that the club psu does not work, Geoff you were present on several occasions when i mentioned it was broken, you even said if its beyond repair we should buy a new one.

The clubs FT726 and ICOM 203 will be made avalible for the Torch, but before that the FT726 would be required for VHF Field day.

Until some other people get off there backsides and make themselves avalible to help finish the clubs antennas, I wont offer any assistance, I'm fed up being the main person that turns up for sessions doing repairs etc.

If the Torch event had been properly organised as a club event and disscussed openly and fully I might not be so negative about it.

I'm supposed to be the events sec, yet this was organised and registered without any Input from myself.

As it stands a Lot of the club will be involed in War and Peace a event the Club has surported for many years, This hasnt been taken into consideration for starters.
No work parties have been organisied to Finsh the Club Antennas
VHF field day seems to have been wiped in Favour of this "event"

In Future any Ideas for Club Events etc, need to go through proper Channels and be Discussed properly.
I have no ill feelings about any members wishing to do this event, But i have major reservations about the way it has be organised and thrust apon the club without proper planing or regard to how it will be achieved.

Sorry Guys

?

This is a supposed to be a radio club not the house of commons, too much politics for my liking.? I have only been a member since September 2011 and in fairness communication is not one of the clubs strong points, strange for a radio club!? I have only just been added to the group email so I don’t have a history of communications between members, but if this is the normal anti this and anti that and foot stamping then perhaps I’m in the wrong club?

?

I understand this WAB event was offered to the club for the 19th July back in early May by email from John Stocks, I certainly wasn’t asked if I was interested.? When I mentioned it to Ian on the Thursday net; which also seems to be of little interest to the majority of the club membership, which also is fine, but again please give us all the choice of what club activities we want to take part in, ?he said he wasn’t interested but perhaps we should discuss it as the WAB organisation were anxious for us to take part.

?

Regarding equipment, during my training for the Foundation, one night I decided to bring in my own 2mtr rig and power supply as I knew that part of the training wouldn’t have been completed without a club radio on site.

?

I am very grateful for the effort that has been put in by certain members that have enabled me to achieve my 2E0 call sign in a relatively short space of time, the reason I decided to join the Maidstone club was to meet “like minded” radio enthusiasts and to obtain my licence.? I’m not interested in the War and Peace show or in reality the VHF field day, but I truly hope all those that are have a great time and enjoy themselves.

?

Personally I’m grateful to Geoff for setting up the WAB event day, I think it will be a rewarding challenge for the club members that decide to work the stations.

?

Well that’s if from me, I need to get back to unblocking my bathroom sink, something I’d rather not do, better to be playing radio, ain’t life a bitch!!!

Ian,

?

Gentlemen,

My problem is the decision to run the event was taken without full consideration and discussion between the club members. But for it to be thrust apon the club like it has I believe is wrong. It may have been well meaning it's not the way it should have been done. Gentlemen (Hopefully the last!).
?
Thank you Bill for your common-sense approach to our current situation. This reflector group should be used for club information, not argy-bargy snipes at one-another.
?
Unfortunately, the total-lack of information about what’s going on – either through the official-committee or between members - is the root-cause of many of our current problems. Last night, in company with several other MYARS members, I attended the MARTS AGM, where information was clearly communicated and members were asked for their views on the future of the club. They published an assets register (that’s a list of all club equipment - including its purchase cost, current value, insurance value – and – importantly – where it all is), yet most of us haven’t a clue what equipment our club has or where it is? What struck me was the total professional manner in which their club operates; sadly, it was in total contrast to the shambolic organisation that we have.
?
Due to the lack of organisation and structure in our club, I have often been tempted to leave MYARS and concentrate with MARTS, but I like the Maidstone club people, and consider them friends. However, events such as we are experiencing now seriously make me reconsider, as I am now at an age where I don’t want any unnecessary hassle in my life.?
?
The VHF Field day is the weekend of the 7th & 8th July, but the Torch event is not until almost 2 weeks later, so there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why both events cannot go ahead. We spend all year doing basically nothing at the club, then, when two interesting events come along, people look for excuses in order to not get involved and help out.If things don’t change, I will leave, and you’ll have to find yourself another Treasurer. Our financial year ended on 31st December last year, but nobody has even considered holding an AGM: that is not my job – I look after the club’s money – but it has not happened because – quite simply – nobody cares anymore. Despite me asking, the committee have not met properly for the last 18 month; how can the club ever have direction if the committee members don’t even know what’s going on?
?
If we do not quickly sort things out and start working together as mature adults, then I shall be wash my hands of MYARS and you can all get on with it. However, I shall give it one last chance – but it will be the last!

Keith Anderson

Hi to all

Communication has been a problem ever since I joined the club. To date communication appears only to occur in niche groups and not to the wider audience. I thought it may improve but alas its become worst.

In my view communicating by email does not always work for a variety of reasons. Some don't use email. Some don't monitor their 'inbox' too often. Some prefer not to join in the discussions for all to see. Its an age old problem thats been around for years.

I think we need to take a different approach:

If there is anything to be formally said on the Monday night, it must be said by standing up (or at least bringing everyone to attention) and talking to everyone present as a whole and not only to the persons near to you. This latter approach happens too often. I have on some occasions left the club not knowing what has been discussed to other members and found out later that decisions have been made.

Not all members turn up every week and therefore the only course of action is to ring them to get their views. I know of no other way but it will be time consuming, however I am open for other suggestions. An email should also be sent on what was discussed as a catch all.

Credit should go to Ian and others for installing the antennas just recently. Thank you from me. Unfortunately I was away on holiday when this occured. This is an example where poor communication resulted in an arrangement made without giving anyone sufficient notice. If someone had asked me directly I would have helped as I will on any occasion if asked, dates permitting.

Amateur Radio is a hobby and all activities from key members is done on a voluntary basis, however in order to drive the club forward and attempt to involve everyone we need to be positive in our approach and not rant and rave like what happened a year ago or so.

Communication must be a top priority because without it the club will continue to suffer.

Keith - 2E0KJA

Ian,

?

Gentlemen,

Hi All,
???????????? I have just returned home from a weekend working, my fault i have a bad habbit ....I eat!???? I see you have all been buisey over the weekend putting the club to rights.? It has taken me a while to read all of it.? I take the point about JB's generousity in storing the eqipment, and next time i am at Capel i will pick up the remainder of the Clubs equipment and return it.? I hope someone can solve the resulting storage problem that this will cause at the Hut before it arrives, as i have no ideas !? I also hope that other members that have equipment will return it as well!
???????? Whilst on this topic I hope that Monday evening we will have enough members attending to finish the Antennea installation project as this has now gone on too long. I will not dwell on why this is.

An AGM can be called at any time within reason, but we do need? ALL committe members to be present (and to know who they are, as i am shure that i do not!).

We do need an up to date memebership list B4 this is done so that Ian can update the reflector.

This comes to you from your Club Chairman, who is certainly not "In The Loop" of what is going on within The Club.? I can only comment on what i know is going on, and it certainly seems to me that i do not!

I feel it would be proper for the Chairman to be kept informed of things that members think they need to do in the name of The Club.

Dear Trevor and all,
?
I had not originally intended to? come to the club tonight as it’s the monthly Swale Club meeting (of which I am a member). However, I feel it’s important to forgo that in order to come over to the hut; I hope that before starting any antenna work tonight, we can all sit down and talk - in a rational manner - about the way to take the club forward. Clearly, there are many issues that require urgent attention, and I would rather be positive about improving matters than burying our head in the sand and pretending there are no problems. If we didn't take this opportunity to lance the boil, then the moment will be lost. I would ask all who will be there tonight to be very honest about voicing their concerns in order that we can resolve our current problems. However, I reiterate – it is essential that we do this politely and rationally, and? we must be prepared to listen carefully to whatever is said. Sometimes this can be hurtful, but it’s no good pretending that our problems are not real!
?
Hopefully see you all tonight.

Gentlemen,

Right I've read the rules for the torch event, we need to work the maidstone Station as Gx4WAB and/or Gx7WAB and then send the log book in.

I would suggest the Gx4 call on Hf and the Gx7 call on VHF

Hi All,

Sorry Guys

When I mentioned it to Ian on the Thursday net; which also seems to be of little interest to the majority of the club membership, which also is fine, but again please give us all the choice of what club activities we want to take part in,? he said he wasn’t interested but perhaps we should discuss it as the WAB organisation were anxious for us to take part.

Ian,

?
