Re: Olympic Torch Special Event Station
Sorry Guys ? This is a supposed to be a radio club not the house of commons, too much politics for my liking.? I have only been a member since September 2011 and in fairness communication is not one of the clubs strong points, strange for a radio club!? I have only just been added to the group email so I don’t have a history of communications between members, but if this is the normal anti this and anti that and foot stamping then perhaps I’m in the wrong club? ? I understand this WAB event was offered to the club for the 19th July back in early May by email from John Stocks, I certainly wasn’t asked if I was interested.? When I mentioned it to Ian on the Thursday net; which also seems to be of little interest to the majority of the club membership, which also is fine, but again please give us all the choice of what club activities we want to take part in, ?he said he wasn’t interested but perhaps we should discuss it as the WAB organisation were anxious for us to take part. ? Regarding equipment, during my training for the Foundation, one night I decided to bring in my own 2mtr rig and power supply as I knew that part of the training wouldn’t have been completed without a club radio on site. ? I am very grateful for the effort that has been put in by certain members that have enabled me to achieve my 2E0 call sign in a relatively short space of time, the reason I decided to join the Maidstone club was to meet “like minded” radio enthusiasts and to obtain my licence.? I’m not interested in the War and Peace show or in reality the VHF field day, but I truly hope all those that are have a great time and enjoy themselves. ? Personally I’m grateful to Geoff for setting up the WAB event day, I think it will be a rewarding challenge for the club members that decide to work the stations. ? Well that’s if from me, I need to get back to unblocking my bathroom sink, something I’d rather not do, better to be playing radio, ain’t life a bitch!!! ? 73 ? Bill 2E0ELT ?

7: We will need HF and VHF radios (2 mtrs), so
its a good excuse to get our all our equipment back in the hut and ensure its
all working OK.

8: Please do think about joining us on the day –
most of us will never get this chance again, will we? It will be an invaluable
experience for some of the newer members to experience.

9: Please let me know in the next week or so if
you’re interested, as I need to know that we have enough members to host this

Re: Olympic Torch Special Event Station
I will not parcipitate in this event nor offer any assistance with this.
Members of the club will have to arrange for the aerial work to be finshed, The club power supply will need to be replaced or repaired before this.
The more important event before this is VHF field day on the 7th and 8th july, this should be our piroty not this "torch" event.
Nobody I have spoken to has expressed a interest in the Torch event and I feel it should have gone to Committiee before being made a Club event.
We should be putting our efforts into VHF Field Day and making a name for the Club. That is Less than 4 Weeks away and at the Moment seems very iffy that we will make a entry.

Gentlemen,
?
1: As you may be aware, the Olympic Torch passes through Maidstone on Thursday 19th July. As it goes around the UK, the WAB Group (Worked All Britain) are holding special event stations in the area through which it passes, and hope to cover as much of the route as possible.
?
2: Several members of the club have shown interest in participating in this, so I have registered our Club with the WAB group to take part on the day using the call sign G3WM. I have received official notification and the call log-book to confirm our registration. I have spoken to Leslee and booked the hut for the day, so no problems there!
?
3: Ideally, at least 6 members are required, bearing in mind the operators, loggers, rest periods etc. I already have 4 people who wish to take part, although one is subject to being able to get the day off work (no problem for those of us who are retired!). However, the more the better, but we only have 6 weeks to get prepared!
?
4: Remember, this event is not until Thursday 19th July, so you have plenty of time to sort-out your diary’s!
?
5: These are highly-prestigious stations; having listened (and made contact with) several stations, they are very busy indeed – usually lots of pile-ups - because people actually want to log a contact with the operating stations each day.
?
6: If you are interested, will you please let me know so I can ensure we will do our club proud on the day. Because the stations can get very busy, if we’re not prepared, it can cause problems in dealing with the amount of traffic generated; we will need to keep calm at all times and ensure we are in control rather than letting aggressive callers dictate the running. Consequently, I hope to use a few of our meetings as training evenings at the hut in order to ensure we are up-to-speed with our operation procedures.
