Graham,
I seem to remember Roy Holgate being introduced to the YMCA by Robbie G3ERY. ?I think there was an EGM - probably when the building was due for re-sale. In my mind it was still in Union Street at the time .?About that time, I used to write a small piece each week for the Kent Messenger?Maidstone Edition called "CQ Corner".?If you can search the KM archives for 1963/ 1964 / 1965 you may find some answers ?I used to go to the club meeting on a Tuesday or Wednesday night and then walk up Week Street and push the handwritten report into their letter box after the club meeting. ?There may be some stuff in the paper
that gives a clue. ??
I am as certain as I can be that when we had some activity at Cheshire House in Mote Park that Roy was involved then, but I don't recall how. ?
It would seem to fit that Roy took the responsibility of closing down Union Street, positioning a holding place in Mote House and he was?definitely?fully engaged in the Melrose Close, Loose development and migration. ?
If only we had all taken more care to record history at the time.

Hi All
A bit more information. Malcolm, Robbie Robertson's son told me that
his father was General Secretary of the Maidstone YMCA for two
years, I don't remember Malcolm saying when that was exactly, but it
was sometime in the late 50's early 60's.? I don't know if Robbie
was succeeded by Roy Holgate as General Secretary or someone else
held the post before Roy took over. I know that Roy Holgate was
quite young when he became General Secretary.?
I wouldn't hold your breath on getting a new building to replace the
former Childrens house, developers are rather slow in meeting their
Section 106 obligations.

To those who dont know the
History of Maidstone YMCA, the Orginal Building was in
Union street approx where the Loading Bay to Primark
is.
Maidstone YMCA was formed in 1879 by the Churches of
maidstone, Originaly as Maidstone Church Institute, In
the Early 1930's the Institute invited the YMCA to
take over the Running of the Institute, In the early
1960's the Institute Building now very old was sold to
Littlewoods stores (now Primark), the proceeds were
used to build the Old Sportscentre at Loose on the
site of the Institute playing fields.
The Building we currently use is the Former Tovil
Childrens house, The Childrens house Society set up
Several Childrens houses around the Countrty , Tovil
Childrens House was the last one the society still
ran, although since the late 1970's the YMCA had
contract run it on there behalf, when the society was
wound up, it's assets were transfered to the YMCA.
In early 2000 the YMCA Sportscentre at Loose was in a
bad state of repair and Maidstone Borough Council had
withdrawn the subsidy to provided affordable sports on
that side of the borough, the decison was made to sell
off the Playing fields to finance the new Sports
centre at Loose.
The Childrens House will shortly be replaced by a new
committe centre, you may have seen the artist
impression in the lobby, this will be mainly financed
by a section 106 agreement from Golding Homes to do
with the redevlopment of Coombe Farm estate.

G6NU Meeting

Maidstone Radio Club was started in 1937.
They were in Upper Fant Road. After the war they
reformed and met at a now demolished school in
London Road. In about 1952 a second Club was
formed in Maidstone by G6NU and Des Mullen
G3ABF. They met at premises in Union Street. Not
the YMCA there though. The trail then went cold
in my research after about 1956, which was the
last report of any Maidstone club activity in
RSGB Bulletin, Wireless World or Short Wave
Magazine. A Maidstone club was reformed in 1962
at the YMCA in Union Street Maidstone. As Graham
correctly notes Robbie G3ERY was chairman. There
was a Scots guy who was Treasurer I remember.
The original Maidstone club of 1937 had the call
G3WM. It was never re-issued after the war. I
managed to get it reissued in 2005. When I left
Kent Bill Walker in Tunbridge Wells held the
licence. He first joined the Maidstone club as a
schoolboy in 1951?
Other members were Jack (later) G4EMC,
Dickie Bird G2BLU, Jack Warner G3ABZ and Dick
G2BMP who later emigrated to VK. I can't
remember his VK call off hand but I worked him
several times and he visited the club in about
1985.?

Hi
I remember Bill G6NU, I often heard him on
160M in the 1970s. I know I did contact
him probably more than once, but without
my logbooks I cannot remember exactly
when.? I also have vague recollections of
meeting Bill, but the man who would
remember him well is Peter Pickering
G3ORP.? As many of you know the Maidstone
club closed down in the late 1950s and was
restarted and became associated with the
YMCA with the help of Robbie Robertson
G3ERY who died in 1976.? I don't know if
Bill Nutton was also involved also.? I
think the club was re-formed as the
Maidstone YMCA Amateur Society in around
1962/3. I had a chat with Robbie's son
Malcolm about when exactly the club was
re-established, however Malcolm passed
away on 10th. August.? Peter Pickering and
Jack King G4EMC are the only people I know
who know what went on over 50 years ago.?
The last time I looked at the club web
site it seemed to imply that the Maidstone
radio club has been in continuous
existence since it was first established
in the 1930s, that is not true.
I will speak to Peter and see if he would
like to come to the meeting on the 19th.
October, I should be more available then
as well.

Dear
MYARS Friends,
It occurred to me that there may be
some members, within your club, who
knew William (Bill) Nutton G6NU
"Naughty Uncle" who was a founder
member of the MARTS. As well as
founding the MARTS, I believe that
Bill played a part in the formation of
an amateur radio club in Maidstone.
Whether or not this became MYARS I do
not know but some members may be
interested.
I would therefore like to invite
anyone from your club to the following
meeting of the MARTS on Friday 19
October 2012 at the MARTS QTH (Tunbury
Hall) open at 19:30 hrs local time.
Please note this open invitation to
members and friends old and new.
On the evening of Friday 19th Oct!
ober 2012 the MARTS will be privileged
to welcome Bill Nutton's
granddaughter, Ms Elaine Nutton, who
has asked to meet the Club members and
has offered to talk, informally, of
her Grandfather.
As you may know, from the beginnings
of the MARTS, throughout until his
death 30 years ago early in 1982, Bill
was active in Amateur Radio and served
as a long time President of the MARTS.
It seems appropriate that, in its 90th
year, the MARTS will have this
opportunity for some of us to
reminisce and others to learn about
G6NU's life and to share, with Elaine,
what we know of his part in the Club's
history.
