Some Clifton History
开云体育Hello Gang! ? Please find below a few lines I received from John Lambert (G3FNZ) regarding some? historical background on the Clifton.? As you may be aware John was one of the founding members of the club and went on to have a fascinating career in the Royal Navy? and then was involved with the development of both aeronautical and maritime long range HF communications. ? I speak to John on the telephone quite regularly and he always has some interesting anecdote to impart regarding either the club or his pathway through the many avenues of radio communication. He tells me he is on the cusp of sending his ‘initial mail’ to this group then we will all be able enjoy his recollections of past times ? Here is a copy of his latest anecdote:. Hi All? just a little bit of info re the ISWL and the Clifton ARS.? Just after the war the Short wave magazine started the ISWL in competition to the British short wave league , they then invited members to form clubs or “chapters”? four local listeners met and talked this over, this was Bill Martin, Norman Moore ,? John Theobald? and one other. They decided to form chapter and called meeting of anybody interested at the Clifton rise school.? This was attended by about eight local SWLs including myself. And it was decided to call it CLIFTON ARS. .We took part in top band cw competitions organised by the SW Mag , once we had members with a licence and came third and second on several occasions.?? Hope that is of interest. JOHN LAMBERT G3FNZ ? I am also looking for an excuse or other reason? to hold another Clifton Net on 80m…………Birthday, Anniversary or an event that may have directly influenced “The Clifton”. ? Looking back into my Clifton Country Club file I find that the first CC Net was held on 21st January 2002. ? We could mark this anniversary by holding a Clifton Net on Sunday 21st Feb? OK it’s a month late but who’s counting? ? As conditions for inter-G on 80m are still reasonable around 2.30pm. Can suggest that as a start time on 3.690Mhz? ? So how about it gang do you think it is good idea? ? Let me know what you think. ? 73 de Tony ? ? ? |
Re: G8GHN and all that--
Hi Laurie,
Interested in your research with the ISWL and the origins of CARS . Thought about obtaining and looking in some early Bulletins ( they used to appear free if buyer collects ) in what is now Radcom. Wonder whether G3GHN got a mention in early field days ?or other activities? Maybe others have some old copies of the “ Bull “ stashed away?? Don't really see any mileage in resurrecting G8 GHN ..... after all is G3GHN ever activated on the air nowadays? Briefly thought about suggesting the club re kindled affiliation with RSGB,(?51 pa) but looking at the paperwork don’t see any appetite just to perhaps get G3GHN and CARS mentioned in AFS and the RSGB activity contests. ..... maybe I have attended one too many club committee meeting and AGM ? 73 Bob G4DBW |
Re: G8GHN and all that--
开云体育I think it died the death since it hasn’t been validated since Jack died.? I’m not sure what OFCOM does about it presumably they write to the licensee and would have had the correspondence returned... Regards ? Martin G0DCG ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? ? |
G8GHN and all that--
Hi folks I guess the idea of resurrecting the call g8ghn? for vhf , from correspondence ?on this forum, is a non starter-- since it always apparently led to confusion with? g3ghn for HF.? And also confusion with current similar sounding call signa. So guess it remains on the books as a Clifton club callsign in honour and memory of Jack G7BKH? And for interest have been in touch with the International short wave league ( have heard their special call on the air [mostly 80m] on occasion).? Have asked them? about any Clifton connections found in in their archives (significant? dates or call signs etc.) but so far without result-----. Next Clifton CC? net? Anyone got a special birthday perhaps? or the first sunday pm after lockdown 3 !!!! 73 all? lawrie G4FAA ( who has been jabbed twice-Yippee!) |

Amplifier wanted
Hi Folks,
Im gathering parts for a 70MHz Solid state amplifier based on an MRF151G. I don't have a big heatsink or box then I realised that someone may have a broken amp that I could re-purpose. Does anyone have a bust amp they would be willing to sell me? Something like an old Microwave modules 100W or "300W" CB amp would fab. More in hope than anticipation.... Cheers Steve M0BPQ? |
Re: G8GHN
Its pretty easy to get them back, but I am not sure it is worth the effort as I wonder when it was last used??
I'd be reluctant to use G8GHN on VHF now anyway as Bob G8HGN is very active on 50/70/144/432 and that is too close for comfort. Maybe it would be nice for someone to call into the net as G3GHN when Tony is in the chair..... Any objections? There isnt even a legal requirement to complete a log anymore! Cheers Steve, M0BPQ |
Re: Origins
开云体育Dear Bob ? Thank you for your e-mail: I must admit I haven't thought about these matters for some time. A quick look into the archives shows them to be incomplete. I get back to AGM minutes 1954. I do know that when I joined the Clifton in the mid 60's it was the stuff of legend even then. The club was founded by members, some of whom were members of the International Shortwave League, who started the meetings at Clifton School, Clifton Rise, New Cross hence the club name but they only stayed for six weeks. One member got them the rent on 225 New Cross Road (they were rent controlled tenants) which is how they stayed there until vandalized out in the early 80's My membership lasted until I went to University in 1968 and encompassed me getting the G8AQD call. Field days were down in Kent, Wrotham Hill, Crockham Hill and Whitehorse Farm, Shoreham. I remember there was rivalry between the a clique of members that hailed from the Beckenham area most of whom worked at Muirheads. Quite a number of members didn't have callsigns Gordon Sweet, Norman Moore, Reg Hinton Dave Reed, etc. I've still got the crystal controlled AM 70cm Tx that Dave built. My return to amateur radio was in the early 80's having been made redundant I needed a hobby to lift my spirits. It was the time of CB 27/81 but when I went to the Post Office to get the license the regulations were so restrictive it prompted me to get my old call back. By that time Arthur Gould (Jakey) G3JKY was chairman and we met in the pub at the top of Clifton Rise. B Licensees were allowed 2m and you bought a Japanese multi-mode. DF competitions were on 2m FM in cars around Kent. One amusing anecdote was Bill Martin's account of his station inspection by Post Official Mr Smith (who was apt to be all pee and importance) who asked Bill how he rotated his beam antenna. Straight faced Bill replied “ The Armstrong Method”. Mr Smith duly wrote it down on the inspection form. Hey ho! They were the days. Hope you are keeping well Best 73's Martin G0DCG ? ? Re: Origins
Hello Martin,
Hope you are well down on Romney Marsh.? Often wondered who were the original founding members of CARS? ?? I remember Bill Martin G3FVG and Cyril Bullivant G3DIC, who would have been licensed at the time. Hearsay tales of? the club originally taking part in field days from Mountsfield Park come to mind.? I was one of the "new members" with a "B"? licence when G8GHN appeared - must have been around 1973. Thoughts were that it was mainly used for VHF field days - to allow the B licensees to focus on 144 and up ,? with the A licensees in the 70MHz? tent.? My memory fails me when trying to recall what (if any) vhf gear there was at 225 New Cross Road. Memories are of a homebrew topband transmiitter and the B40 receiver which fed a long wire down the garden , but as to operating on VHF from 225 it's all a blank. Only lasted about 12 months as a "B" licensee as Harry G3UAD took me under his wing and taught me CW with the help of a homebrew code practice oscillator constructed by Gordon Sweet. By 1974 the compulsory 12 months CW only stint had been replaced by a one off? 12wpm test , in my case at GPO HQ in Central London.? I became a new fangled "G4"? licensee considered by some as nearly as competent as a real G3 Radio Amateur? :-) :-) My old original G8 call lives on after i reapplied fro it a few years ago? and occasionally give it an airing.? 73 Bob G4DBW (and G8HBA) |
Re: G8GHN
开云体育The call died with Jack G7BKH: No attempt was made to keep it going since we found when you entered both calls into a contest you kept getting “we have already worked you before” even though you haven’t! ? I think Ofcom would regard it as gone... Regards Martin G0DCG ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? From: lawrence atkinson

Re: Origins
开云体育As far as I was led to believe GHN was the next available callsign when we applied for the call back in 1900 and frozen to death.? There were no vanity callsigns and you could only reserve a call if its issuing was imminent (CAR was long gone).? G8GHN was applied for when most of the new members got Amateur Sound licence B calls but of course these weren’t proper licences since you hadn’t done the one year CW only stint and been inspected by the Post Office Inspector (Mr Smith in S E London). ? Thanks Tony - it works!
Suggestion- following on from the success of the two recent Clifton Xmas nets can we have another members birthday to celebrate as an excuse for another clifton CC net whilst Lockdown 3 is extant ? ( hint-Tony HUZ seems to have the widest 80m coverage!). And does anyone know the origins of the call G3GHN ( or G8GHN)? 73's all es HNY lawrie faa( 6th Jan) |

Re: test to new g3ghn groups.io
Hi everyone,
I have set the group so that I have to moderate the first message sent by a new joiner, just in case a spammer joins somehow. Once you have sent one message you will be free to post as you like. I have no intention of moderating the group in general. Stay safe everyone - huge increase in covid patients at work this week..... Cheers Steve, M0BPQ |
