Re: Clifton Pre-Christmas net
Hi Steve,
It was me!? Just got it going today lashed up a temporary 12 volt supply, and I was amazed at the performance with it just sitting in the shack, compared to my 100 foot doublet and cobweb antennas.? Made a 1m? diameter loop from a? length of RG213. Fitted my amplifier board in a? 20mm conduit box, and found a plastic box in the shack for the? bias tee. Price for the pre assembled? bias tee and Mk 4amplifier boards is now ?49 ! ?
?
Great to hear everyone on the net? yesterday.
?
ARRL 10m contest this weekend? - might be lively? :- )

Re: Clifton Pre-Christmas net
Hi everyone,
?
Nice to speak briefly today.
?
Someone (Peter, RQZ?) mentioned building a "wellgood loop" from M1GEO. . I have built three of these for different people and have a 1m diameter version made with 1/2 inch heliax at my remote site.?
?
It is very good, with comparable performance to a dipole at 60ft on 40m and 30m, slightly down on 80m compared to the dipole and a lot worse for DX than my 580ft beverages. It isn't very good on 160m compared to the bevs and dipole, but a larger loop would probably fix that.
?
As it uses a cheap 75R coax, it is easy to site well away from the local noise sources that you hear on the tx antenna and is a good addition to any antenna arsenal, assuming you have a separate rx only input on your radio. LZ1AQ argues that small Rx loops only need rotating to null out the noise and that they are omnidirectional for signals coming via the ionosphere, so no rotator is required once you have set it up unless your interfering noise sources move. I have tested it with a rotator and agree with LZ1AQ at my location.?
?
If you have been considering a rx loop like a wellbrook (at >?400!) then this is a viable semi-homebrew alternative. I think the fully prepopulated boards were ?46 plus postage, fully assembled. You just need to provide the loop itself and coax, mast and enclosures. Happy to provide info or 3d print some bias-T boxes for clifton people if you need them.
?
Cheers

Clifton Pre-Christmas net
开云体育Whatho fellow Cliftonaires, ? Just to continue the tropic of a ‘seasonal net’ raised by Lawrie G4FAA and circulate it via both the ‘G3GHN reflector’ and the Clifton Country Club e-mail list. ? So apologies to those who will receive a duplicate of this mail. ? It seems that the idea of an impromptu net this coming Thursday 12th Dec. at around 12noon on 7.170 Mhz +/- ?has met with the approval of some already……….Good News! ? The more the merrier, therefore if you can spare the time and drag yourselves away from wrapping gifts or working out which bulb has failed on the several sets of Christmas tree lights and to quote Martin G0DCG, the great bard of the Clifton “Just stay RELAXED” and join us on 40m this Thursday. ? We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lawrie for initiating the idea and for selecting the frequency. Lawrie having had speak with the ‘radio god’s who have promised us a clear frequency. Hoorah! ? Oh yes, you may also be interested a 30mins programme on BBC Radio 4 this evening (8/12) at 19.15 about the high speed Morse competition held in Tunisia. It should be a good listen…Featuring operators from all parts of the globe.…..It is extremely good to hear that our hobby and in particular the skill Morse code is being featured.? If you miss this opportunity to listen it will be broadcast again on Thursday 12th Dec at 09.30 & 20.05 Hrs on the BBC World Service? either on line or for the SWL’s on 6.195 Mhz. ? For those who are unable not to make the 40m net…….My I take this opportunity to wish a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful 2025 ? Catch you on the wireless! ? 73 de Tony es Suzanne ? |
Re: Christmas net
Hi all,
Able to make? Thursday 12th at noon,? 22nd December less certain depending on whether the grandkids turn up on their "Santa Run"? hi hi. ? Noted Steve G4RFC still holds the G3GHN call.... seems a shame that that call cannot be reactivated for the nets. He is still at Blackheath on QRZ.com. Hope is in good health. I'll put the 12th in the diary and hover on 7170? +/- QRM .

Hi All
I hope everyone is well and all your aerials are surviving the storms this weekend. I am able to come up on the 12th but I may not be around on the 22nd due to visiting family before Xmas although isn't certain at the moment. Well done Steve on your dx on the RSGB 2 mtr contest. Every time I listen on 2mtrs these days it is dead as a door nail. Anyway hope to work you on one of the nets before xmas.

Re: Clifton winner!
开云体育Hello Steve, ? Well done that man!? And thanks for keeping the Clifton on the contesting map………..QSOs on VHF of over 1000 Km, how fantastic!………..Very reminiscent of a VHF NFD? held at Wrotham Hill in the 80s where we were working into eastern Europe and the USSR (that dates me!) on both 2m & 70cms………. ? 73 de Tony (G0HUZ) ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Steve Bunting M0BPQ ? Hi everyone? ? I entered the RSGB 2m contest in November as Clifton ARS. I’m not in any other club these days. The good news is that “we” won the open section even though I only operated on the Sunday.? There was a spectacular tropo opening and I worked loads over 1000Km. Best Dx was a HA. ? i don’t recall this contest being a Clifton event in the 90s! ? Cheers Steve. M0BPQ ? ? ? |

Re: Christmas net
开云体育Whatho Gang! ? The idea of a seasonal Christmas net sounds good, and yes Colin is correct the memsahib and I will be at sea……….On the 22nd of December we should be in port at Oporto (CT1)……….I have recently acquired a 7Mhz loading coil for the G-Whip.? As we will have only been on board a few days and depending on the Capt’s permission together with the prevailing WX in the Channel and the Bay of Biscay we may not? have been able to deploy the antenna or find the WX so unpleasant to allow any ops on the open deck . To answer Lawrie’s question, we do have a wire antenna (HWEF for 40m) that we carry for use if the G-whip becomes un-serviceable ………..Unfortunately where we deploy the ‘end fed half wave’ is not ideal as it suspended across the aft of the ship between the outside stairwells some 25ft below where our vertical antenna sited on deck 12. ? Allowing for WX and permissions we will make every attempt to come up on 22nd………At 2pm………..However, 7.170Mhz sounds reasonable but you may well be confronted by QRM from Europe by 2pm whereas 3.650 may prove a much better option for an inter-UK net ? Some of us held an impromptu 7Mhz net on 16th Oct……….It attracted a goodly number of Cliftonaires plus a few passing guests.? Please note it was held at 12.30pm and by the time we closed at 13.40pm the Euro-babble had become quite noticeable. ? Would anyone be interested in another net next week say on Thursday 12th on 7.170Mhz +/- around midday? ? Needless to say we will be circulating the Clifton /MM group regarding our next extended nautical jaunt once we are at sea and operational…. ? I would like thank Lawrie (FAA) for relaying the information via this group.? As we do have a few problems with some e-mail providers whilst at sea. ? Catch you on the wireless! ? 73 de Tony es Suzanne. ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Colin Eloie G0UJK via groups.io ? Should be about over xmas, just depends on memory and if not busy with family. Hope?to be on, might need a reminder from someone hours before! lol getting old and forgetful. Of course I could be looking for Tony too. He said he will be away over xmas on another trip! ? On Fri, Dec 6, 2024 at 11:39?PM lawrence atkinson via <lawrie4019=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Off the coast of Egypt
Hi Everyone? Managed to hear Tony this morning for the first time in his travels. I heard him about 9.15 local time on 21057 but he was very weak and could only give him about 339 report. I did try to reply to his CQ's but to no avail. If anyone is interested there is a nice app for the phone called Hamalert which informs you when someone is calling CQ on the RBN. I hope everyone is well, I am now active in my new QTH in Sevenoaks mostly on CW using Qrp. 73's Keith G4TJE? |

Over the horizon Radar
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2024 at 09:09 Subject: Over the horizon Radar To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Greetings fellow radio ops, ? ?We are now off the coast of North Africa approx. ?150miles west of Algiers on a heading of 82 degrees making 16.5knts towards Syracuse Sicily? ? We have made some good contacts both in CW & SSB. Including working Colin G0UJK and Peter G7ULL together with a number of G-stns and North Europeans on both 12m & 15m ? ?The best DX so far was on 15m working CW into JA, if this was our first QSO. ? ?Again we are having problems with the 17m coil for the antenna........Suzanne and I have dismantled it and are hopeful that we can rectify the fault...... ? ?We have found severe QRM on 15m between 21.260 and 21.295 as a continuous wide band noise.........A number of DL stns told me that this was "Over the horizon radar" ? Unfortunately, this makes operating on those frequencies impossible.......Therefore we have changed to our preferred operating frequency of 21.285 to 21. 225 +/- 5Khz ? ?We now have two sea days before Sicily we should be on 12m around 24.906 or 24.960 +/- 5kHz or on 15m 21.225 or 21.058 +/- ? ? ? ?However being a weekend contests may mean we are more likely to be found on the non-contesting bands........ ? Do check the Reverse Beacon Net to see if we are operating on a particular band, OK I know its CW but we will QSY to our SSB options on a regular basis. ? ?Since the CME from the Sun on Wednesday evening the bands have been very turbulent. such that yesterday every QSO was very difficult totally unlike to previous two days. ? ?A note for Peter G7ULL............You are now on all our mailing lists Peter, and we hope to work you again soon. ? On sea days we will endeavour to be on the air from about 0900hrs GMT but sometimes earlier. ? DO keep a watch on the Reverse Beacon Net especially as conditions are rather ‘unsettled’ ? Catch you on the wireless! ? 73 de Tony es Suzanne ? ? ? |
