Power AC adapter compatibility

None of the portable radio chargers are designed to run the radio. Especially the one supplied with it! They're just designed to charge the radio, and do it best with the radio powered down (after first turning on and selecting charge of course).
That out of the way, if the jack fits and it the same polarity (it's almost certain to be) it'll be fine.
I charge my 817 from whatever I have to hand. The FT2 charger for example is the same size barrel and output.
I have a USB type C power delivery to barrel adaptor too that kicks out 12V at whatever current the USB power supply can deliver and does the job. Very handy to charge my radios from a powerbank on the go, and I can travel with just my phone charger to do everything.
?
I've also fitted an Anderson Powerpole adaptor to one of my 817s (printed and made at home, but commercial offerings are available) and then it can just charge from the shack supply at home, the club, wherever. Those shack supplies are outputting 13.8V.
Similarly I've made a USB type C to powerpole adaptor, and that'll run the radio off some of my powerbanks.
I've also put powerpoles on an old internet router power supply that kicks out 12V, and that charges the batteries fine.
?
All the radio wants is something like 10V - 16V DC in and it'll be happy, but anything over 12V is just more heat dissipated in the regulation circuitry inside the radio. 10v might not fully charge the batteries, but it'll charge them to 10V.
?
Hope that helps.

Hi Mark,
I have a FT-818ND and I operate it together with a compact Meanwell power supply (12V / 3A) for medical applications. I use it for both normal receive/transmit operations as well as for charging the internal battery.

The FT-817 charges its internal battery pack from rig power, so the question is can you power the FT-817 with the PA-44b power adapter.

I presume you can, since the supplied power adapter for the FT-817 is only 0.5 amps.

Are you sure about the PA-44b part number? I see the PA-48b as an FT-60 accessory, but it too is only a 0.5 amp 12 v power source.

Both the FT-60 and the FT-817 can be powered by the EDC-6 power cord, so I see no reason you couldn't charge the battery with the alternate power adapter that is also 12v and at least 0.5 amps, but I've not done it.

Hope this helps,
