Rig Control SW with FT817

开云体育

I use my '817 for POTA events and value it highly for its reduced RX current drain and honest 5W TX power output.? It's an older rig but still reliable.? ?I bought one of those lightweight Evolve III education computers a couple of years ago at the wrapup of the Great American Shutdown.? I am very impressed with that computer.? It seems powerful enough to support modern, Windows 10 software and has a very long battery life, up to 10hrs, and can be powered by a 12VDC supply.? What a great combination for a portable station, the 817 and the Evolve III.? What is missing is the rig control software.? I am mostly CW but can be pulled into digital modes by my Club members.??

My question is, what is possible using these traditional platforms, in particular for backpack radio work?? Do I load up on HRD, Fldigi, and N3FJP, or would only one these suffice?? Best practice for interface cables and circuits???

Looking at HAMRS, it requires a network connection for full functionality.? That introduces need for a hotspot resource, not often available without an aircard-capable internet or cellphone device.

I appreciate your experience and welcome any comments and recommendations.

I'd suggest looking for USB cables with ferrites installed (Amazon carries some nice Tripp-Lite cables), for rig interface I'll defer to others.

On the evolve, I'd suggest N3FJP for logging, WSJT-X runs fine for FT8 and similar digital modes, and I believe there is an FT-817 commander program (called FT-827 commander or something similar for rig control, programming, etc).

I too like the evolve laptop, good luck!

Hi Howard

In terms of connectivity you need a way to get the audio in/out of the 817 and a way to CAT control it.

i’ve been through various solutions, and the one i like the most are these bluetooth dongles you just plug in and show up as a BT serial port on the computer. Voila CAT control without wires.

Then for the audio you need a usb Audio card dongle and a cable that can be DIY.?

?
This is the one i use:

You need to remove the microphone bias circuit of the Fob (a resistor and cap if im not mistaken)

With the hardware sorted out you can use all kinds of digimode software from flrig/fldigi to wstjx (ft8) even winlink (vara/ardop).

hope that helped. On the SW side there isn't really a one thing does all.?

Hi Bruno, I can't see the pics of your audio rig, can you please repost or send a link to the dongle you use?

Thanks and 73s

Sure Patricia

lets see if now the pictures show up this time:

With the FT817 i mainly use the Ewent FOB but pretty much any of these are based on the same chip and work the same. The other one is a CM108 based on the CM108 chip, these are also interesting because the come with a GPIO pin that can be modded and used to trigger PTT on the radio (i use this other board for other radios because of the convenience, but it also works with the 817). The added components and wire are part of the mod. In both fobs you do need to remove the components providing the DC Bias voltage normally used to power an electret microphone. ?Theres a good video here?.

cable “schematic” is a bit crude but you get the idea.

i also put a pic of the removed bias component from the ewent FOB.

Hope it helps?

Hi All,

For interfacing to the FT817 and other radios I have moved away from signalink and home brew interfaces to?. This little box has no driver issues, and covers both serial and audio requirements and needs just one USB cable.

I've used a dedicated FTDI based Yaesu interface and well as Digirig with my full size laptop and an Evolve III.? I've run DXLabSuite, N3FJP and N1MM+ logger on both laptops with the 817 interfaced.? I've only interfaced WSJT-X to DXLabSuite, but that's just my laziness on getting the other packages interfaced.

I am interested in the Digirig interface. I want to interface with N3FJP logger and Winlink Express using Windows 10. How do I go about that with the Digirig Mobile device and FT817?

I use the Digirig with my 857D which is similar.? You will find that the cables used from the Digirig to the radio are generic Ft-8XX
?I find they have a forum and often cover such questions.

Try :

Technical Details: Yaesu FT-817, DigiRig (COM3) WinLink Packet P2P using Soundmodem Having a tough time getting WinLink configured to use the DigiRig and the FT817. I can get the setup to receive, but it will not transmit. I am certain it is a simple matter, but after hours of reading over the last three months, I have not come across the information that would get me running. Working with ...
forum.digirig.net

I don't know if this will answer all your questions.? It should give you a good start.
