Indoor apartment antenna rfi
Thanks for the info.? Any others? On Sat, Jun 22, 2019, 10:06 PM Tom Brown <tom.brown.n4tab@...> wrote: Hi, Randy. |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI hear some have success with a magnetic loop antenna. MFJ has one or you can build. Turn it to null the noise may help. Apartments are a soup of rfi generators. I suspect that there is a way to make an antenna work somewhere in your situation to a certain extent. Do you have a balcony? Move the antenna to different places and try. Geez the way the bands are (lack of sunspots), even those with tower based antennas are finding conditions somewhat challenging. Consider doing some hamming in the great outdoors. A park away from the rfi can yield a zero noise floor with an antenna thrown up in a tree. Nothing like being in the middle of a local forest or large park away from all noise, you will be amazed at what you can hear. 73 Chuck

Concur!? Apartment operation sucks.? The ultimate solution is to move.
Some relief might be had.? Run your radio on battery power and pull your main breaker.? If your noise level is significantly reduced, there may be some relief found in cleaning up your own noise generators.? If the noise remains high, your neighbors are your main noise source.? You might ask them to work with you to reduce noise.? But that can become a problem too.
Although my home location is very quiet, I enjoy portable operations myself.? Just yesterday I was up on the highest summit in Northern Bavaria, making contacts on 40m-30m-20m.? Some of the signals were S-0, but the contact was completed.
Good luck.

You can solve half the problem (the receiving half) by using one of the online receivers at websdr.org.? I am currently listening to field day traffic using the Northern Utah WebSDR #2.? A good antenna in a low radio noise location.? When the S8+ noise level starts to drive you crazy, listening with the WebSDR is like a breath of fresh air. What is cool about this is the WebSDR streams the whole band to you and you use the application to tune the receiver across this band.? Many people can be listening at one time, all tuned to different frequencies. 73 de KH6IDF |
Friend I live in 11th floor apartment too and I have a Yaesu FT817 and FT897, both I use a Magnetic Loop antenna. I get good contacts near the window. See the antenna that I use in: This LoopMagnetic is very good. Oliveira PU2OLT Sao Paulo-SP Br ? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýRandy, High noise across the bands is unusual unless there is something causing widespread hash.? Often these come from neon signs or plasma TVs both not often found in apartments these days.? Loop antennas are more sensitive broadside to the loop so if your loop goes around the room, then the noise is likely above or below you.? Dimmers can also produce a lot of hash but are usually not on all the time.? So if the noise comes and goes during the day that might give you a hint.? Do you have a ceiling fan in this room?? Does it have a remote control?? If so, you might try turning off the power to it. Al Skierkiewicz

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMy suggestion: switch off every electrical appliance in your appartement. ?Switch off every fuse so that there is no electrical power in your appartement. With your FT-817 you are still able to receive. If you hear no noise than your own equipment causes the noise. If you still have the same noise level the source should be somewhere outside of your appartement.?Vy 73 de Rolf, DL8BAG Rolf Schr?der Tel.: + 49 170 21 07 14 3

LEDs them selves do not produce RFi. The culprit is the power circuit in the LED housing that converts the AC to DC. Practically ALL new radios are lit with LEDs. If they produced RFi, they would not be used. Also the light emitted from the LED chip is produced by movement of photons not radio frequency. Just wanted to clarify the statement that the other person stated. Tom KC7BJE |

I glean from what has been said is that an LED light supplied by a 5v power cord supplied by a 12v battery should not cause much RFI.? If I am incorrect, please disabuse me of my error. 72/73 DR TIMOTHY-ALLEN ALBERTSON KD?OIA/(ex KG6IRH)

LEDs are semi-conductors and can produce noise, like a noise generator.? Without proper bypassing and such, they can be quite the noise generators

like any diode.? I suspect in your case, there may be many sources combined. Like one suggestion, if you can run your radio off of a battery, cut all the power to your apartment by the circuit breakers.? Then bring the power back up, one circuit at a time and then back off while you listen for the noise in your receiver.? You may hear the noise reappear, either partially or full boar. That can help isolate it if it is coming from your apartment.? It may be there with the power all off, suggesting it is from a source outside of your apartment. This is just a starting point for you to isolate the source or sources of the nose. 73, Joe, K8JP/K5 On 6/23/2019 11:32 PM, 'markaren1@...' markaren1@... [FT817] wrote:
Guys LEDs generally do not produce wide band hash unless they are smart dimmable?or are some kind of array.? Many of the sources suggested will produce noise on a particular frequency or band but wide band noise on all bands --

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTim, If the lamp is not intended as a dimmable model than yes, it should not produce much in the way of wideband noise.? In narrowing your search, the noise present all the time or only at certain times?? Does it turn on and off regularly, does it vary with seasons?? Does it change if you move your radio to another part of the room?? Are you running your radio on battery when you experience the noise?? Does the noise occur when other devices in the building are operating, like the elevators, refrigerators, laundry machines?? I had a serious issue a number of years ago and tracked it down to a neighbor¡¯s a few houses away.? When I asked them about it, they mentioned that a furnace had been acting up and would I look at it.? Sure enough, while this was a synchronous motor ( no brushes), it did have a winding that was arcing.? Before they could get a repair man out, the furnace failed.? Motor replacement solved the problem.? But that noise would occur for several minutes at a time and then disappear.? Another time, a constant noise was getting worse, so I used my AM radio with a bar antenna inside and started walking the neighborhood.? When I realized it pointed at a power pole, I went to investigate and found the power pole smoldering.? Apparently, it got struck by lightning and caused a carbon path down the side of the pole to a grounded bolt used for support.? The power company didn¡¯t want to come out until I pointed out that the support was within ground level reach of young people, they were out in a matter of hours.? A replacement of the insulator and a chainsaw to break the path fixed that issue.? If you are near the top of your building, there may be equipment on the roof that is failing or not properly installed.? If the noise turns on and off, I would suggest that the equipment is the source.? If you are near the center of the building, then it is possible the power cables feeding the floors above you are passing near your room.? The field from the power cables will couple directly into your antenna.? Is your antenna a single loop or multiple loops?? Can you move one side of the antenna so it is much lower than the other side?? Does that change the noise level?? All of these things could help determine the source. Al Skierkiewicz
