CW key

New to the group hello from GA
817-nd
I am having problems with the cw keyer
That is to say I cannot make any key work I feel certain I have selected a setting that is causing this situation and there is someone smarter than i to help me.

Questions:
a) Are you using a straight key or paddles?
b) How are you monitoring your signal?
c) Using a dummy load and external monitor?
d) Key down, do you get a transmit light (red)?
e) Are you using the internal keyer or your own electronic keyer?
f) Are you sure your cable from key or paddles is wired correctly?
g) In Operating Functions Menu 9 (VOX BK KYR) is KYR selected?
h) What tech data do you possess on the FT-817? I use "The Packet Reference." It's very handy. Even the owner's manual is good. Both should be to hand. If not the Packet reference, then maybe "The Nifty Mini-Manual".

To select the straight key or keyer paddle must be in CW mode.

My FT817 is non-ND, my manual shows CW transmissions on page 32, might be different for yours.

For selecting key or keyer paddle with built in keyer operation:
1. F key and go to menu 10
2. [VOX,BK,KYR] will show.

For straight key there should be no arrow at KYR, for keyer paddle arrow showing.

BK turns on/off the rig xmting when key pressed.? If off can hear CW tone, but rig will not xmt.? If on will act like VOX in SSB, just key on pressing key.

Again must be in CW mode.

There are other setting in other menus for CW like pitch, delay (hang time) and sidetone level.
