Flashing Screen and no audio on FT-817ND

Greetings, all:

Somehow, and I'm not certain how, the display on my FT-817ND has started flashing. It's not a backlight flicker, but the display itself is turning on and off. Also, no audio comes out of the radio whatsoever. The radio has been modded with the SotaBeams DSP filter, but is otherwise stock.

I followed the instructions that G0FTD posted about charging a battery pack (https://sites.google.com/site/g0ftdradio/home/ft817-info), then removing one battery and turning it on and off again. I did it with AA alkaline batteries in the tray (after charging the FNB-85 that the radio came with). No luck; it's still flashing and I can't get it to work. None of the standard reset methods from the manual seem to have any effect.

Any other advice, short of sending it back to Yaesu?

TIA,

Aaron / K7ALF

Hi Aaron,

I would remove the internal batteries and try it with external 12 to 14 volt power supply or external known good battery.? Sounds like battery tray not making good connection with batteries & rechargeable battery pack not fully charging.? Could be bad connection on the little battery plug also.

Good morning, Aaron et al:

At last! Now I know I haven't gone mad! My FT817ND does the same thing, y'see.

My radio was purchased from the estate of an acquaintance. It has a CW filter of some sort, and it has a WindCamp battery but no charger. Nor did it come with the original battery. :(

I use mine without any internal battery, ever, and mine occasionally flashes with no audio when I turn it on. I press the Home button, and the flashing stops and audio comes back. No rhyme or reason for this behaviour, and no internal battery connection to go sideways.

BTW, this is the same radio I posted about last year at approximately this time: it also occasionally gives a nasty 550 MHz tone after turning it on and moving any button or dial. One of my Elmers asked an electrical engineering friend to look at it, and it was he who discovered the Home button trick. That also stops the ugly tone and gets the radio working. The engineer couldn't see any obvious reason for this behaviour.

I cannot suggest a cause, but at least there's a solution for both bad behaviours. Aaron, please let use know if you do find a cause for whatever's happening.

73 and happy Thanksgiving to those for whom it is The Day,

This (and the OP's issue) sounds very much like the power supply doesn't have an adequate output current rating.

Unlocked PLL perhaps?
I think that's what the ft-100 does when the PLL can't lock.

Hi, all:

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them have solved the problem. The PSU used is a good one (Alinco DM-330MV, and I've verified it's putting out the correct voltage and current with other devices). The unit is making a good battery connection, since it charges and discharges just fine. :-(

I called Yaesu tech support on Friday, and they indicated that it was likely the reference oscillator that was failing. As one poster suggested, it may also be a PLL failing. Boxing it up and sending it in to Yaesu on Monday. I don't personally feel qualified to do the re-calibration myself. Hopefully that's all it is.

So far, I've not had good luck with my FT-817. Hopefully with this fix that will change!
