Can you be a bit more specific on your PM hikes?
Yes, Nick... I usually operate for 2 or 3 hours at a time with a
normal QSO style. Overall, maybe 85% receive/standby and 15% transmit.
Maybe a little higher % transmit when there is good propagation or I'm
calling for a sked or ragchewing.
I was thinking along the lines of 7ah
That should be fine for /PM. 7Ah gel cells are the most popular
portable pack size for hams (mostly due to low cost).
There is an interesting survey of portable operators on this subject:
For casual /PM, gel cells are fine, but for backcountry packing,
you'll want Li Ion, NiMH, or better yet Lithium primary cells.
I think the best combination for "Transceiver + Amplifier" /PM
operation is with a separate battery feeding the amplifier. That way,
the transceiver can be maintained at good voltage stability. Then, you
are free to let the amplifier run down its battery and still maintain
your barefoot capability. This sort of setup is easily arranged with
the FT-817 and its isolated internal pack.
