SSB Filter Selection - Performance

I am curious, did switching the NAR allow you to insert the SSBfilter? Hi Don, Jerry was installing the CW filter. NAR only works if the CW filter is installed and CW is selected in Menu 38. (NAR also is used to switch from wide to narrow FM deviation.) If you install the SSB filter, the SSB filter is switched in and out via Menu 38. NAR does nothing. I have both filters (but not in the rig at the same time regrettably). The SSB filter is a 10-pole Collins mechanical filter and is very nice. It is very flat over the passband unlike the stock ceramic filter. Don't expect dramatic changes like you observe with the CW filter. The SSB filter effectively boosts the lows and highs (the stock filter rolls off the highs and lows) and cuts off the very lows and highs that the stock filter passes. To really appreciate the filter, I found that using the SP-8 speaker makes a "big" difference. Although I have not had time to get a audio review by the "178" group, initial reports are that the audio is clearer, sounds some better, etc. Another result of the flat passband it that the output is more constant in the PSK mode as you move about the passband. If there is interest, I can post more data about the SSB filter. Perhaps you and I are the only two having this filter! 72 de Barry - W4WB |

via Menu 38. NAR does nothing. I have both filters (but not in the Sounds like you are the first one to really say the SSB filter is worth anything. Maybe all of us ASSUMED since the specs were so close that the reality would be ho-hum You know, it seems so open inside the rig in that area ( from memory )...do you think it would be possible to cram 2 in and somehow switch them? I imagine you may have one-of-each in your 2 FT-817s? Thanks Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. Long Island Ford and Kia dealer GO BILLS! |

I am very interested in any data you have about the SSB filter. At first

"blush" the SSB filter is a waste of money. However, I have heard from others that it is a good "refinement" for the FT-817. ----- Original Message -----

Sounds like you are the first one to really say the SSB filter isworth anything. Maybe all of us ASSUMED since the specs were so close that the reality would be ho-hum )...do you think it would be possible to cram 2 in and somehow switch them? Well, one will remain filterless for the time being and the other gets filter swaps when needed. Yes, the "gross" specs lead us all to think that the filters were very much the same, but not so I think now. I will try to collect my data and post it at one time in the near future. I also have been trying to figure a good way to have both filters installed. The way to do it is to remove the ceramic filter and replace it with the mechanical SSB filter (some impedance matching likely required). The ceramic filter is small by comparison. If you are willing to remove the speaker (I'm not), then there is adequate space. I have my eye on the space for the TCXO. It will be a few weeks before I have time to really consider making this mod. If I can, then Menu #38 would be set to CW and the new SSB filter will be active as was the ceramic filter. NAR will flip the CW filter in and out. Best arrangement of all! 72 de Barry - W4WB |

I assume that with the opt SSB filter that it is used in the TX chain also??
