Antennas
F.B. Nutter, Jr.
Hi Group,
With all this antenna talk I don't know why someone hasn't suggested the following. Several companies (transeltech.com & a few others I can't remember come to mind) make hardware for using 2 "HamStick" antennas in either a vertical or horizontal configuration. They can be used to make a small relatively inexpensive antennas. I have used them with my Paragon when storms have taken my other antennas down & also with a Scout portable. Them work great & are very easy to tune. Set the whip once, mark it & you're set. I'd like to hear about anyone else's experience with this antenna arrangement. 73, Fil W8FIL |

Hi Group,Hello Fil, I have 2 "12M" Hamstiks being delivered today for that purpose. I bought a regular 3/8 adapter, and a SO239 - 3/8 from RS. They are already mounted on a Aluminum L bracket ready to go. Hopefully I be able to try it this weekend. With the Z11 ATU it should give me a couple of bands, 10,12,15. Rgds David |

I believe. Two of those back to back would make a nice 4 band dipole I should think, although as the whips are 100 inches tall it would not exactly be small. As they are 70 pounds each over here I am not going to buy two just for an experiment, but would like to know if anyone has tried them as a dipole to see if they work. Surely you can find some lighter than 70 pounds. man that is heavy for an ant.. HEE HEE just kidding....

it would be interesting to see what a pair of ATXs or MP-1s put together as

a portable dipole in this kind of an arrangement would do if two folks put theirs together [I haven't yet mustered the $ for my first of either the ATX or MP-1; two would be lots of dough!] if sag was a concern given length/ weight, perhaps the center mounting flange could be mounted part way up a fiberglass pole, with "upside down guys" then extending from the top of the pole out to the ends of the horizontal elements? -----Original Message-----

NW Cumbria. I guess the mid-point between us would be round about
Stafford. For the cost of the petrol for the round trip I could buy another couple. :-) or :-( Julian, G4ILO --- In FT817@y..., "David Perry" <david.perry3@v...> wrote: Julian, where are you? For those with an ATU a cheaper and probably lighter solution (the
Pro-Ams are quite heavy) might be to use plain old aluminium tubing. You could use three different diameters that fit one inside another so it would telescope up for transportation, and secure them with jubilee clips. Is it possible to buy aluminium tubing by the metre anywhere? I use Moonraker Ampro's (Dunno where they got the name). Only because they

use hollow fibreglass Rods and the ants are lighter. I have had sucess with 20m and 10m dipole using the whips but on 40 the band width is too narrow to be of use. I find I get better results using a small spike in the ground to a stud mount and tuning against the natural ground. I also got a Mizuho 40m whip at the weekend it works quite well with minimum counter poise. Chris Taylor G0WTZ ----- Original Message -----

Hamsticks and others of that sort are pretty good, about the best they can be for their size. I suspect you'd get better results - SWR as well as performance, on 10 and 15 with plain whips the length of the hamsticks than you would with those coils inline. |

For those with an ATU a cheaper and probably lighter solution (theIf we're going to live with the poor connectivity of slip-fit aluminum anyway, why not gently crush each section to a slight oval shape, such that they will slide within each other, but with a twist, bind in place, as well as wipe the aluminum surfaces together, possibly puncturing the Al2O3 surfaces to provide better conductivity? Note - that's not an original idea from me. In 4-H, I had an aluminum show stick that telescoped and locked that way. |
