Anderson power pole connectors

Hi all,
? ?I've noticed that there are "compatible" knock offs of authentic Anderson power pole connectors at lower prices. Anyone have any experience with them? Springs, contacts?
Thanks.

I bought powerpole knockoffs from Amazon a few years ago. The housings would not mate up with the Powerwerx housings. The looked similar enough though. I wont try them again.?

I have a variety, they all seem to plug into each other well, but the black/red pairing of the housings seems to need to remain within each brand. I also have a non-branded ratcheting crimper which works very well.

I ran into some knock-offs where the shells lacked a thru-hole for the metal prong to go thru - you couldn't see thru an empty connector.

Joe,
It depends on where you buy them I guess.? McMaster had some that worked pretty well but as other have pointed out the mating slots and tabs are not identical.? We (my FIRST robotics team) ended up gluing them together when used in pairs.? Others are pretty good knock offs.? Price is kind of a clue.? If they are really cheap, they are not likely worth it.? The McMaster ones were pricey but we live close to headquarters and can have them in will call same day.? In a hurry I can run up to West Mountain Radio ( less than an hour away) and pick them up same day as well.

That's my conclusion based on many of the responses. It's a good thing that the topic came up at all in my shopping. I never even knew that there were knockoffs until last week.

Now I have a question. Is there any way to know if you are getting real Anderson Powerpole connectors? I know there are several different shapes and sizes of the connecting part of the connectors but I'm not sure which is the real Anderson connectors.

I think 'real' Powerpole cases have an A in a circle on them, like this (A).

Around here, lots of folks learned "read, right, red" - you assemble the connector so you can read the A, and red goes on the right of the pair.

I'm away from any Powerpole connectors, but that's my recollection...

Correction, 'official' power poles appear to have an "A" on the connector end of the connection, the end you feed the wire into, see this image from powerwerx website:

I’ll add one comment. I recently needed a few of the SB-50 connectors to finish a project.?

Ordered a few from Amazon. The real Anderson crimp connector lugs have a longer tip than the Chinese ones. The Chinese shells have the spring clip extending too long with not enough space between the shell and the spring clip to let the Anderson lugs anchor. They work if you only use theirs and don’t try to mix them.?

I scrapped them and ordered the shells that would work with the various wire gage Anderson lugs.?

Hope this helps someone.?

Doug,
SB50 connectors have terminals that come in different flavors.? Some are meant for high retention and look similar but not the same.? The Andersons also have an tight spec for crimping.? If you don't get the crimp just right, the terminal will not push all the way into the housing.? SB50 are color coded so don't try and mix colors, they won't mate.? If you are looking for a second source, try .? They only sell red SB50 blocks but have terminals and other Anderson connector as well as wire.? They cater to high school robotics and are really good about stocking and shipping.? If you call them mention my name.

The Anderson 45s I have in stock have an A molded into the end of the connector.? If you are looking at the terminal you will see the A just below the terminal.? The SB50 has "Anderson" molded into the body.

I have never noticed those before. I have bought quantities of Powerpoles from sellers at hamfests. They said they were genuine Andersons. Now looking at them, I see those A's on the ends.

Using the crimp tool meant specifically for Powerpoles is a must if you do a large number of them. I have probably put hundreds of them on various cables.
