SW Rcv on the 817
I know how well this radio transmits, but how is it as a sw(hf
milcom, broadcast band) receiver? I am going to be selling some ham
trxcvrs and wide band rcvrs at a hamfest tomorrow, and will be

FNB-72 *has* thermal protection
I just had a short, cordial email from Chip Margelli of Yaesu. The
FNB-72 *DOES* have a thermal switch for over-temperature protection.
He didn't mention over-current, so I still presume no

Yup! And I didn't think I was being particularly hard on it. Just
walking around in an open park (no trees, etc. to bash it against).

Re: ATX Antenna connector
Presumably the BNC spike broke because of flexing of the antenna used
in a pedestrian mobile situation? I have never heard of one breaking
in any other situation. I think the ATX should really have

Re: RTTY and the FT-817
In the DIG PSK-U mode there is an 30Hz offset between tx and rx.
(Others have discovered this)
The fix is ...
Simply set the DIG mode to USER-U and all is well.

By low, sell high. But seriously, folks -- one other thought: Where
are you operating? If you go to 14070 USB, you should see somewhere
between ten and 20 PSK31 signals in your passband.

Re: Do NiMH packs come with fuses?
That is why, as I posted probably 2+ months ago, I added a fused to
the adapter I made from the RS pack to the rear connector of the 817.

Maha Thermal Fuse
Greetings All:
I read with interested yesterday the discussion on what is inside the
Maha battery packs. ALL MaHa packs have thermal fuses. The FNB-72 in
particular has a small thermal fuse inside

Re: ATX Antenna connector
The BNC "plug" is actually an RCA-female to BNC-male adapter. You
can attach the antenna to the front panel of the rig, get a good grip
on the rig with one hand, the antenna with the other, and

Hit SEND too soon. That sentence should have read: (I also discovered
that 1700 mAH goes really fast when using a "constant carrier" mode
like PSK31.)

If I had to do it again, I'd go for the PL-259 connector. The bnc just
doesn't seem very 'sturdy' for such a heavy antenna. I am using an

competition to an R390 but good for on the go SWLing. It is a bit better than

I am thinking of purchasing an ATX antenna (Parents currently in UK !)
Reports of broken pins in the BNC worry me somewhat.
Should I go for the PL-259 or the BNC version?
I tend to favour the BNC
