There's a neat, 50W design in the current ARRL handbook. It uses two
commodity (read: dirt cheap) MOSFETs at 24V/4A for 50W PEP off 2W in.

FT-817 Seen in San Antonio Ham Store
Worked someone on 17M who said they worked in a ham store in the San Antionio TX area and that the Yaesu had come by to show sample of the FT-817 and had possibly left on in the store as a demo.
