Basically you are correct .. electrically the Outbackers are
very similar to the ATX (Tapped coil and wanderlead band-change)but
in addition to QRO they are also nearly indestructable.

I would suspect the they may also use a heavier gauge wire than the
ATX so they may be slightly more efficient radiators. I can't do a
direct comparision because I don't have an ATX (I bought a few ATs
instead) but the weight of my Outbacker is much greater than my lowest
band ATX. Great mobile antenna, but for pedestrian mobile the AT/ATX
works fine and as you alluded to is significantly cheaper.
