If your purchased the MP-1 Tripod you can use the Tripod legs to lengthen
the base section for the MP-1. All hardware is coupled with 3/8 x 24 thread.
In a pinch you can carefully couple the sections with standard 3/8 x 24
nuts. I have had trouble finding the correct couplers at hardware stores but
the 3/8 x 24 coupler off any of the available "Mirror Mount" style antenna
mounts works fine (the one on the top of the Tripod Mount is readily
available for a test!!).
The thing I like about this approach is that everything still packs in 8"
sections and gives you the option to extend the base to 32"
