Re: FT-817 Satellite ops.

Curtis, Tony

VE7FM:

I was wondering... Since ISS was in full sight, thus only 200 miles away,
did you need the beam? How much power were you putting out? Would a dipole,
J-pole, quarter-wave whip or rubber duck also have worked?

Congratulations Joe.......Its nice to read that you are using FT-817 for
satellites & ISS....I have not purchased an FT-817 yet and I do my Walking &
Bicycle operating with my Kenwood TH-D7A.
I was digipeating APRS via ISS last night on Orbit # 14614.......I
digipeated my APRS couple of times via ISS....International Space
Station.....using TH-D7A in my left hand palm and a homebrew
miniature handheld 2 element beam in my right hand. If this interest
you, click on url http//www.ariss.net .....then click on VE7FM-
7 on the "Station List" to see the maps of my location........go back
to Station List again and click on the astrick in the second column
infront of VE7FM-7 and you will some more details....if you wanna see
more...go to Station List again and right on the top of the station
list click on the first column infront of ISS
This particular pass of ISS was especially very thrilling for me....I was in
the front yard looking at the Space Ship going across the sky as a very very
bright star and at the same time I was sending the aprs packets to it and
then getting data from ISS back into my handheld..... the porch light was
off and in the country side where I live there are no street lights and its
pitch dark... the TH-D7A keyboard & Data Display was lit green----every
transmission turned the red led ON and its light was reflecting on the
handheld beam etc......and there was this green led blinking ON when all
the aprs data was coming from ISS ....and now add to all this the audio
beeps with data from several station scrolling fast on the green display
with keypad lit in the dark ...out of this world space ship like set-up in
the palm of my hand and at the same time looking at the ISS travelling up in
the sky.
I hope to have a Pedestrian Mobile or HPM qso with you soon on AO-27 ,
UO-14 and also exchange some messages via ISS....if this interest you
further ...you may wish to read message #2690 &#2754 on HFpack Group.
Also, I would like to read more about your homebrew similar to Arrow
antenna.....73
