SSB Filter Test - A Winner

This afternoon, W3PM and I performed a few tests on the Yaesu
optional SSB filter. We are located about 5 miles LOS and operated
on 10 M with signals at S-8 to S-9.

Qualitative observations by Gene W3PM were that the mechanical filter
sounded better, sounded crisper (cleaner), and had more punch than
the ceramic filter.

Quantitative measurements were made using a true RMS volt meter by
HP. The average signal was 2 dB stronger with the mechanical filter
when compared to the ceramic filter.

Like many others have reported, I also have had lots of unsolicited
reports that the rig has good audio. Such comment is far less
frequent with my FT-1000MP and Heil Goldline microphone although the
audio is just fine.

I should point out that the receive audio is noticeably changed when
using the mechanical SSB filter. Given that you are using a good
external speaker, the noise with the mechanical filter has the sound
of white noise while the ceramic filter sounds like pink noise. I
plan to measure the noise spectrum soon with a spectrum analyzer to
quantify this observation.

At this point, I am leaning strongly towards the position that the
mechanical SSB filter (Yaesu or INRAD, take your pick) is worth the
money if you want to optimize your SSB experience.

I also have the HC-4 and HC-5 elements from Heil. When I mount them
in a spare microphone and make some tests, I will share the
observations. Although the stock mic seems to do a great job, some
others have reported improvement with these Heil elements.
