You would be better off using a 12v 7 or 8 Ah gel cell battery I use one with my FT817 and get about 4 days with 5 watts before the
battery voltage drops to 11 Volts.

start to drop off? The reason I ask is I am thinking of bundling a
group of 4 or 5 of the radio shack 9.6V 1600 maH battery packs
together in parallel to make a field battery pack. But my latest
experience with them makes me wonder if I would be better off with a
12V battery. The power out (based upon signal reports) seemed to drop
off rather quickly while using the battery packs.
