In response to Chip's suggestions on tuning the MP-1, which I heard
him relay to several folks at Dayton, Julian scribbled:
<snip> "It goes against the grain a bit to ignore the SWR altogether,
since when I had the SWR meter inline it often seemed that two bars
could equal 3:1 or more, which I would never normally transmit into.
It certainly makes it a whole lot easier if you just don't worry
about the SWR."
This is the very advice my elmers gave me when I first got on to HF
back in 1983. SWR ain't important; power out is! I had a TS-430S
then, and would tune for peak DC input AMPERAGE! If I remember
correctly, they told me that way, *way* back when they used to put a
neon bulb across the open-wire feedline & tune for maximum
brightness.
Suggest everyone forget the so-called "SWR" meter on the rig & use
the Power Output setting instead. You'll still get the HIGH SWR
warning if warranted (in addition to no power output ;-)
