Re: Fw: MP-1

Pres, thank you for forwarding the practical advice on tuning the MP-
1. I've also found the discussion thread on the MP-1 and ATX to be
very helpful this past week.

I'm a newly licensed ham with little operating experience and I've
yet to make a contact using either the MP-1 or ATX Walkabout. At the
house I'm using an Alpha Delta DX-EE loaded, multi-band dipole in the
attic with a Z-11 auto tuner and I've had great success at 5 watts on
10 thru 40 meters. Following my lack of success with the MP-1 and
ATX I purchased a half-length G5RV to throw into the trees but I'd
really like to get the vertical whips to work for those nights I'm
stuck in the hotel room. Keep the advice coming and thanks to all
who have shared their experience and wisdom.

Pres, is there any way you could relay this to the 817 board. . .I
still have no access allowing me to reply, and this Julian guy seems
to be in a lot of trouble with the MP-1 (which I find to work quite
well).

Julian, the easiest way to tune the MP-1 is to listen for noise.
Make a rough setting, listening for a noise peak, then move your hand
back. Listen again to the noise, then move the sliding section up or
down a turn or two to see if the noise gets louder after you move
your hand back. When you have found the noise peak, send a couple of
dits on CW, and watch the SWR meter. If you have only one or two bars
of SWR showing, that should be plenty close, although I usually am
able to get one or no bars at resonance. No funny counterpoise; just
the set that comes with the MP-1.

I have worked all over Europe, including deep Russia, using the MP-
1 and 2? watts on 15 and 20 meters (ten has been kaput for DX
lately). This from California. The sharpness of the noise peak
indicates a lot of Q, which translates to high efficiency.

If you have Julian's e-mail address, just forwarding to him would
also be OK.

Sorry to bother you. . .sure was amazing the 817s flew out the door
at Dayton.
