Sounds like a low voltage during transmit problem. A 3 watt power supply will
charge the batteries, if it puts out 13.8 volts, and the radio is OFF during
charge, but will not supply adequate AMPERAGE to power the transmitter at 5
watts power. (or perhaps your power supply is 3 AMPERES. or 40--45 watts ?) --If
the latter is true, perhaps you have a defective power CONNECTION, or
something is wrong with the power supply. If all is OK, your FT-817 frnt panel
should show a voltage between 12.5 and 15.0 volts when you connect the power supply
and turn on the radio. Voltages outside this window indicate a problem, and
the voltage should REMAIN above 12.0 volts DURING transmit, when using your
power supply, if everything is normal. Regardless of where the power comes from,
if the voltage EVER drops below 8.0 volts, the radio is likely to malfunction,
or turn off, and this is normal.-73, KC3VO
