Good evening Matt. Yeah - I see that I cannot spell either! <grin>. MINDS! GREAT MINDS!

In my defense, I am suffering JET LAG from nearly a month in Germany, then two days home, and immediately on to my 4 x 12-hour-night shift rotation. I don't know where I am right now! I activated 5 SOTA summits while in Europe. Quite an accomplishment, considering the primary mission is to get my wife over to visit her mother as much as possible. My sister-in-law is Dl1NLG, my brother-in-law is DG7NFV. Although they have always supported my SOTA fun, neither is really interested. Between my 2017 visit and my 2019 visit, my nephew Andreas became DO5AL. Every visit, I attend a joint SOTA activation, followed by a party on the next summit over. This was my first activation of the visit. And the party was awesome too! My nephew had heard of SOTA, but had never tried it. He had a KX3 and a wire antenna. One activation, and he was hooked. Also interesting to note, he quickly became envious of the 2m-SSB and 70cm-SSB capabilities of the FT-817. So within the first week he sold the KX3 and bought a clean almost new FT-817ND. When he discovered that I leave a set of Arrow Beams for 2m and 70cm in his basement (weight I don't have to carry back and forth), he quickly begged permission to use them. Of course. I mentioned that I had previously activated in OE and OK, and I'd like to get more countries in my log, he came up with a fast run to HB0 and HB9. We travelled 1,000 km and activated two summits in two countries in just 18 hours. Departed at 0500, returned at 2300. He has fallen in love with the FT-817ND. As we know, there isn't another radio quite like it. A few days after activating HB0 and HB9, we activated 2 local 10-point summits. And he asked me to send him some antenna supplies. I've gathered up about half of what he asked for already. Yes - as we both know, the 3S Li-Fe-Po4 is almost a perfect match to the needs of the FT-817. It is a very good choice for nearly any mobile portable radio in the 4S configuration as well. But a 4S Li-Po? Not so much. I really Really REALLY wish the 3S 3600 mAh Li-Po internal pack I have was not discontinued. I only have two left, and one is showing signs of going weak on me. It may eventually force me to switch to external batteries. Have a GREAT (minds) evening sir. Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. El Paso, Texas - DM61rt. SOTA W5T-Texas Association Manager. Re-reading his response, I think Joseph understands battery chemistry, just missed the reference to LiFePO4 from the OP perhaps. Subject: RE: [FT817] ZIPPY Flightmax 8400mAh 4S2P 30C LiFePo4 battery Hi Joseph, agree that a 4S LiPo is not suitable for the FT-817 (or any other 12V nominal radio without a buck converter or similar), however he is looking at a LiFePO4 not a LiPo ¨C the voltage range of the 4S LiFePO4 is fine for the FT-817, although the better option is the 3S LiFePO4 which has a more suitable voltage range for the FT-817 than the 4S LiFePO4 batteries. Tom, I bought three of the 8400mAh 4s2P LiFePO4 ¡°zippy¡± batteries about 7 years ago. Still going fine, but I use them for radios that need to be around 13.8V (which the 817 does not ¨C it works fine down to 8V or a little lower). I last saw them on the hobbyking site about 12 months ago when I was shopping for some of the 4S 4200 mAh LiFePO4) ¨C they were hard to find, but I did find them in the end. Just looked now and couldn¡¯t find them on hobbyking, so possible that they no longer sell them ¨C perhaps an email to ask if they still sell them? As above, would recommend the 3S LiFePO4 batteries over the 4S ¨C noticed that the US warehouse is currently out of stock for the 4200mAh 3S1P LiFePO4 batteries, but if they are like the VK warehouse, they will restock in a week or two. Alternatively I like the 3S LiPo 2500mAh batteries for the FT-817 ¨C suitable voltage range, cheap, very lightweight and lasts for multiple activations. Subject: Re: [FT817] ZIPPY Flightmax 8400mAh 4S2P 30C LiFePo4 battery I would not recommend running the 817 on any 4s lipo.. Although I have done it, they charge out to over 16 volts DC. Just out of curiosity, why the zippy flightmax? You can run any 3s lipo or lifepo safely. Hobbyking have the Turnigy series batteries in which I have used for many years. The current rating on them are conservative. I currently am using 4x Turnigy 20-30c 5000mAh 3s LiPo batteries for my portable pack. This 4 pack will run my Ft-991a at 100 watts for a good while in a pinch and they never get hot. Joseph V. From what I can gather, the particular Zippy is a one-off.
