Well now, that makes me even more curious - if it doesn't do anything, then why is it there ?? Strange to say the least...

The button doesn't do anything just make sure the speaker doesn't press down on it.
When you switch to CW mode you still have the choice of wide or narrow filters. If you turn off the optional filter in the 817 menu, I think you would just have the wide lazerbeam filter in line then regardless of mode.
