Re: Digest Number 8948

Hi

I guess it depends. If you don't do CW then the narrow filter isn't mandatory, and if only occasionally do CW

then an audio filter might be good enough. I have the 500HZ filter installed and have used it, but I am old

enough to remember using receivers that didn't have much filter and relied on the built in filter in my head,

and have used and do have an audio filter. I now to a lot of digital operations with my FT817 original and don't

use the CW filter much.

Your mileage will very on this subject in my opinion.

Brian,
Do you have a narrow filter in this radio? It is possible that you
have
selected the narrow (CW) filter for all bands. That filter is
normally only
500HZ wide or less if it is not a Yaesu filter. With the filter
in, you
will hear very little normal band noise. Also, if you remove the
antenna
while listening, the background noise should go down considerably
when you
remove the antenna. Please double check the menu squelch/RF gain
setting to
be sure. Background noise should rise and fall while you rotate
the front
panel SQL/RF knob.

This is a link to see where you will most likely find the digital
modes on
HF. Also I would like to mention
that I have noticed compared to other radios (my 991A in
particular), my
817nd does not have the receive that other larger radios have. I have
confirmed this just changing antennas between radios using various
bands
and daytime and nighttime. Digital works pretty great, especially FT8.
