I would try to find a decent Android Tablet running KitKat (4.4), Jellybean (4.1-4.3), or Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0). 817Companion supports more functions than pRxTx, but won't run on anything newer. The version of pRxTx on the play store is not compatible with 6+, but there is a newer version of that on the author's website. 817Companion will be more similar to Commander than pRxTx.
