OT: Teknatools USA affiliate (maker of Nova drill presses) files for CH 11 reorganization
开云体育Couple of weeks ago the chuck on my ~30 yr old Delta DP suddenly failed. Long story short I stumbled on Nova Viking sale advertisement at Grizzly. It was nearly $500 off. I ordered it few days ago but delayed shipment as I am out of town. It has been in the back of my mind that I could not find any floor model Nova Viking anywhere. So I decided to search and found that the USA affiliate of the New Zealand based company filed for chapter 11 reorg on Feb 25, 2025. I guess I will call the company now to learn more and determine if I still want to go forward with this purchase. The Grizzly site has following on warranty: Contact??regarding warranties on their NOVA products and technical support. The PRO-TEKTOR Premium covers your motor for an additional 8 years and ALL electronics for an additional 3 years. Limited time 10-year motor warranty and 5-year electronics extended warranty! Imran Malik IAM Wood Creations |
Thanks for sharing.
I had the exact same experience. Grizzly was the only company that had them in stock. Everyone else was quoting delivery dates into the middle of the year. Unfortunately, I didn't make too much of it. I ordered on Jan 27th and the drill press arrived the next week. This Reddit thread has some (maybe ex) employees sharing context and answering questions: ?
Hopefully they’re back on their feet soon. |
开云体育Hi Tom, I was told the same by the Teknatools person I spoke with yesterday. FWIW, he said they received a large shipment of lathes etc recently. He also said that they will continue to honor the warranty. I am planning to keep my order with Grizzly, time will tell how it goes. Hi Imran,?
?
I just picked up a new drill press myself. I have a very small shop, so I wanted a drill press without the motor hanging off the back, which limited me to the Teknatool Voyager/Viking, the new Laguna, and Powermatic now offers a 15" and 20" drill press in the same category.?
?
I don't much care for the screens and electronics, so I was inclined against the Voyager, Viking, and the Laguna, leaving me to choose between the Powermatics. Powermatic is running a $500-off promotion on the 20" machine, so I opted to bump up to the larger machine().
?
Apparently Jet will be releasing a drill press with a screen to compete with the Voyager/Viking/Laguna, but again I don't want a screen so I wasn't inclined to wait for its release. ?
?
The Powermatic PM2820 and PM2815 machines utilize a brushed DC motor that runs through a geared two speed transmission, with speed controlled via the High/Low gear selector and a simple knob on the front ?of the machine.?
?
So far I've been quite happy with it. I realize there are certainly "better" machines out there, I just wanted something relatively simple, relatively compact, with minimal electronics.?

开云体育Hi Tom, PM 2820 looks like a great DP. Nova Voyager is in the same price range but viking is half the price so it fits my budget for an unplanned purchase. Like you I am not thrilled with electronics but Nova has been out a while now and I am hoping they have worked out the kinks. I also receive 10 yr motor and 5 yr electronics extended warranty but one has to take the risk of whether it will be honored. Hey Tom, Well unlike you I love the screen and not having to change belts to change speed. I was all in on the Voyager until I saw the Laguna.Apparently you can normally only buy it from a dealer (rockler or Woodcraft) but it turns out that they reject machines out of hand that have a damaged crate. Laguna receives them back and cannot re-box them. So after they made sure there was no damage whatsoever to the drill press, they sent it to me? at a lovely discount. I got it for $1765.00 all in delivered right into my shop ASSEMBLED! ?It arrived about 2 weeks ago and I did not want to install the chuck that came with it, so at the sage advice of David Best, I ordered a keyless Vertex chuck and that took almost a month to get here from England. Love the machine which also has a Laser and an LED light, a large table surface with t-slots. You can use it for tapping as it goes as low as 60RPM's up to 4000RPM's Two thumbs up from me. Pic attached! Kind regards, Brian D. Milidrag Phoenix Building and Custom Interiors 5300 John R. We have two PM2800B in the shop and both of them have needed transmissions replaced in the first year. One of them also developed chuck incontinence. I don't know if this model is extra special or we just got unlucky. Sent from for iOS On Wed, Mar 26, 2025 at 09:54, Tom Gensmer <tom@...> wrote:

Hi Stan,?
?
Good to know on the PM2800B. Looking at the exploded parts diagram, it looks like those drill presses use an entirely different mechanism than the 2820EVS, so whatever the issue was on the 2800 it shouldn't affect the 2820.?
?
David Davies, thank you for the reminder on the Willis machines. Far more drill than I need, but impressive looking machines nonetheless!?
?
So far the Powermatic has performed well, hopefully it will have a nice, long service life....?

The Powermatic 2800B uses what is called a Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) -- (inside the 2800B, it's actually 2 separate CVTs).? I have not seen any other woodworking machinery that uses this type of transmission (usually it's geared speeds, switching pullies or VFD). ? This type of transmission is actually commonly found in hybrid cars (think Toyota Prius), but I'm sure the carmakers have engineered this much better.
?
You can see the actual transmission working here in this video at the 12 minute mark:

开云体育Hi Aaron,Isn’t it similar to Reeves drive in principle which is used on machines? I have not kept up on CVTs but Honda, Nissan and Toyota all use them. The interesting fact in early development was to use the chain in compression vs tension for better torque transfer. Imram - after googling, I guess you are correct.?? I just have never seen a machine in that configuration.
?
Brian - the one problem area I have seen on the Nova Voyager is the design of the table.?? Apparently, many people have had problems with "locking down the table".?? It can be seen here:
?
Have you had any issues with the Laguna with the table itself?

Anecdotal but I wonder where CVTs could be today if it weren't for the F1 ban on them after Williams Racing made tests runs that indicated a 1-3 second per lap advantage over fixed gear configurations back in 1993-1994 (?).? 7 minute video but fascinating telling of the story. And the sound. I think of this every time I floor my Honda CRV (haha).
