FD250 long mortising chisels bits or other mortising options?

If one were to need more depth than what the FD250 and standard length?mortise chisel sets offer, how to get it done? Swap out to longer sets?

I'm still holding out against a chain mortiser and/or the Porter Cable 513 mortiser.? Mostly because I wanted to retain versatility of applications. What am I missing?

Hey Brett,

Are you making doors, or another application? I have the Mafell mortiser, and i cant?imagine too many situations where it would be appropriate for furniture making. It is a superb tool, but the cross grain cutting action limits you to the thickness of the bar+chain. In my case, a 2" thick tenon, but only down to 1.5". I cant?remember, but i think my roubo bench might have tenons that approach that thickness. Nothing else has come close outside of timber framing. You might be better served by the Makita mortiser. It cuts with the grain, and therefore affords you much more variability?in how thick your mortise/tenon is. The Mafell will run circles around the Makita, but it is much less versatile.?

Brett ,?
My first job back in late 60¡¯s was running a Great Britain ?chain mortiser plunging cabinet stiles in a cabinet shop in Buffalo NY my mentor was migrant master from Hungry.
Few years later i purchased my own. Line shaft I modernized with large 3 phase motor new steel base made of Chanel ?and so on , you could run a 200# person up and down at a foot per second . Needless to say these things are fast .?
I¡¯ve hade a manual Rapid and know I have a BMV ?Centauro oscillating chisel mortiser.?
Vertical style. Nice clean holes a little tricky to use .?
I notice on there web sight they don¡¯t offer a vertical but still a chain type.
I¡¯ve had horizontal slot mortises. Felder f250?
I have built horizontal mortiser complete top to bottom. Slot are accurate but very slow!
A spectacular Fay Egan lightning series sq hollow chisel for punching squares holes air and simi automatic
Chain is my no 1 pick .
On of my back burner build I ?have a sweet horizontal boring machine with a hydraulic Forest City 6 cluster 20 mm center head ?
That increments in 15 degree 360 , with tilting and xy table slotted table of a Schneeberger grinding table .
The table also tilts .
Building to bore sash, and door parts with mechanical fastening.
Never owned one but WAdkin makes a sweet combo .

Hi Brett,?

?How deep are you looking to mortise, at what diameter, and what are your current limits??

I forgot to mention, I do have the Virutex lock mortising machine, which can mortise to 5" deep. It's "ok", really the reason I bought it was for mortising doors on-site, on the hinges. For that it's ok, but it can be a little fussy to set up, definitely recommend practicing on a test piece first every time to validate the setup....?

Does anyone know of a chain mortise that is hand held and can cut a slot 1.5 wide and 8 inches deep.
We need to cut slots into SIP foam core roof panels to install 2x10 rafters.? We are installing a new roof over the SIP.
Our installation of the panels was done (year 2000) before the SIP convection problem was addressed, leading to moisture condensing in the gap between panels that led to rot.
Rather than take off the panels, we will build a roof over the roof this spring.

Hi Robert,?

?The Mafell LS 103Ec slot mortiser has a few configurations:
-- This version will accept a 1/2" chain and has a mortising depth of 11-3/16" deep:?

-- This version can run a 1.5" wide chain, but depth is limited to 5-7/8":?

Neither version completely fulfills your requirement, but I wonder if it gives you some ideas/inspiration?....?

Robert,

The chain mortiser sold by timber tools has an option for 1.5x8 mortise. Here is a link.?

Good luck?

Michael
