Dealing with a Felder KF-7 Compact saw.
#shapersetup
#shapertools
Hello.
I have recently come in possession of a -99 mod. Felder KF-7 Compact saw (Combo saw-shaper) and I'm trying to get it to work as a replacement for my older tablesaw. The machine came from an institution that closed down. It was put in storage and thus some of the accessories for it was missing when I bought it at an auction. I have contacted my local dealership for replacement parts but not surprising there is not much to be had. I have tried looking for listings locally (i live in Norway) and abroad, but have not had much luck in finding the parts or information I'm seeking. Now that the origin story is out of the way, here is my first question I hope maybe some of the wizards in here might help me with: The machine came mounted with what I have gathered, is a high speed spindle. There was a regular 45 degree bit mounted in it. I was hoping to use the shaper on the machine as intended but from what I have found I need to change the whole spindle to be able to use the larger shapertools. Is this the case or do I simply need to change the top part of the spindle? As mentioned Felder has said that the spindles for this model is not available any more. Is there a marked for buying these things used? If so, where? The saw is also missing the mounting kit for the crosscut fence and again according to Felder, the kits available today is not compatible with my saw. This is also something I'm looking for in the used marketplace. I hope this novel does not get me banned from this place at once and that you might enlighten me in the sliding ways:) -jay |
开云体育Hello Jay, Just couple of days ago I saw an add (I think it was facebook) of a outfit that claimed to supply spindles. I did a quick search on iphone right now but nothing came up. In case you cannot find a used spindle, it may be possible to have one made. Oh! to answer your other question, yes you need a shaper spindle to use shaper cutters. Not only that the high speed spindle takes router bits in its collet (shaper cutters have bores) it also spins at a much higher RPM. Here is a catalog pic of high speed router spindle and shaper spindle. AFAIK, all current Felder shapers also use a different belt for high speed spindle. My 2002 KF xcut fence has AL blocks that have the kip lever and these slide in the back slot of the xcut fence. Is this what you are missing??Here is a catalog picture of these blocks: The right block (in above pic) is attached to a fixed slider nut (more like a short bar) allowing it to work as the pivot point, whereas the left one has a floating nut to allow fence positioning at an angle. Not sure if you are just missing these nuts.? Hope this helps. Imran On Jun 9, 2021, at 6:31 AM, woodbeach via groups.io <woodbeach@...> wrote:

Hi
Yes this helps:) Thanks for the swift reply. As I said I live in Norway and the market for used parts is obviously smaller over here. Though getting the spindle made locally vs. getting one shipped over the pond may end up the same price vise ;) I will check that out. I would need precise measurements though.? Also I have searched but not been able to find any good resources/guides for doing the actual spindle change. I may just be my machine playing hard to get (and in some extent me not having done it before) but removing the highspeed spindle has not revealed it self as a simple task as of yet. One of the reasons for my wondering about the spindle types is that the pictures I've found of them shows the spindles with different belt placements. If it is as you say, the different spindles requires different belts, this may explain my confusion. In regards to the mounting hardware for the crosscut fence, all I got with the machine was the fence it self with one flip stop attached. All other hardware is lost in time. If anyone happens to have a similar machine with the hardware, some closeup pictures of the different parts would be much appreciated.? -jay |
开云体育Jay, You will get better help if you post pics of what you have. If your shaper setup is similar to my 2002 machine (see pic) then spindle removal requires following steps. 1. Pull black handle CCW to release belt tension. Following is not necessary but doing it for the first time it might be helpful to move the belt to the lowest position. You probably have 3 belt positions - 3 speeds. 2. Loosen the 2 orange kip levers. 3. Pull the black knob at bottom with right hand as you lift the spindle with left hand. Once the spindle is up like ~30mm the knob can be released.?Pure guess on 30mm but you will know it is high enough because once it is above the licking knob the spindle won’t seat unless you pull the knob out again.?Now use the right hand to move the belt down as the spindle is lifted. AFAIK, there is one belt for router spindle and another for shaper spindles (30mm & 1.25”). Imran On Jun 9, 2021, at 1:42 PM, woodbeach via groups.io <woodbeach@...> wrote:

ok, now I'm just embarrassed. I literally just laughed at my self in the workshop. I pulled the knob and the spindle came right out. For some reason i have just thought of the knob as a spindlelock for when you're unscrewing the collar and such.
I hope this does not get me thrown right out of the group. If so, I deserve it. Thank you so much for taking it down to dummie level for me :)?? FYI my spindel setup/arrangement looks identical to yours, as far as i can tell. Does this mean that my choice of spindles increases? I have been eying the quick change setup but i guess that only fits even newer models than yours. -jay |
开云体育Shaper spindles for your machine should be available from Felder. They also come up used fairly frequently.
|
开云体育Glad it worked out. I am kind of surprised that the spindle is not available for this circa of KF. I believe following (from us_eshop) is the 3 speed spindle for my 2002 machine. It says out of stock but that does not mean, discontinued. Now eshop is known to have incorrect info. I always confirm with sale staff for correct part number in a case like this. If you share your machine label, I can check with Felder USA for availability at least in USA. Hopefully, your machine was sold in USA. USA, spindle will be for 60Hz but that can be handled later. First step is to confirm whether it is discontinued or not. Imran On Jun 9, 2021, at 3:28 PM, woodbeach via groups.io <woodbeach@...> wrote:

A day where you don’t laugh at yourself is a wasted day, in my opinion. Same thing goes for a day where you don’t learn anything new. You got both for the price of one there, so today is a success! I have a 2004 kf700, and I’ve never used my 30mm spindle (I use my 1 1/4” constantly, 1” sometimes, and router spindle regularly). If it fits your machine, I’d be happy to sell it to you, though I’m not sure how to check compatibility. And yes, you need two belts, which I happen to have extras of, again, if they’re compatible. Happy to make measurements and take pictures.? -Shawn On Wednesday, June 9, 2021, 12:28 PM, woodbeach via groups.io <woodbeach@...> wrote:

开云体育Jay, 50Hz motor has lower RPM compared to 60Hz. I believe that is taken care off by using a different pulley. So that really should not be an issue. I mentioned it because when I looked at my book it does have 2 PNs for router spindle (one for 50Hz and another for 60Hz). I do not think it applies to shaper spindles. I will check with felder tomorrow. Imran On Jun 9, 2021, at 4:09 PM, woodbeach via groups.io <woodbeach@...> wrote:

开云体育I went to the US Felder shop and they don’t show shaper spindles for pre 2007, which is what you would need. It will have three pulley diameters. The one Shawn is offering should fit. This sucks, I wouldn’t be able to get a new shaper spindle for my machine…. I mean yes, it’s twenty years old, but I don’t plan on replacing it in my lifetime…I still see folks occasionally on Ebay or on this group having shaper spindles for sale…. probably more than a few that have 30mm spindles but use 1 1/4” spindles here in the USA, so your best bet might be from here.

开云体育Brian, I believe you were looking at HS router spindles as they are for after 4/2007. There is 3 speed spindle on eshop that I posted earlier today. Here it is again. Per the description it should fit as there is no manufacturing date caveats included. However, cannot trust eshop completely either. It is also not in stock so who knows… Imran On Jun 9, 2021, at 9:44 PM, Brian Lamb <blamb11@...> wrote:

开云体育Odd, didn’t show in the shaper tooling page, but it does come up with your p/n as a search, so good news, still available.

开云体育Jarle, Good news. Your spindle is not discontinued, see response from Felder below. You can get it from felder but not sure it is in stock near you. Or you can get one that Shawn offered without wait. Good luck. Imran? Response from Felder: Imran, A spindle for Jay's machine is most certainly NOT discontinued. ?We still offer a 30mm, 1-1/4", and High Speed Router spindle.? Any 6, 7, or 700 series machine's spindle through 2006 will fit on Jay's machine. ?See below. 2007 models through current us a different trunion and spindle design. Hope this helps! Jay unfortunately parts for 6 and 7 series machines are now getting pretty limited.
If you are trying to obtain the mountings for the short cross cut fence 1100mm then the mounting kit should be available under part no?430-133.
If you are trying to obtain parts for the longer fence on an outrigger, then they have long
since been discontinued.
You are correct that the spindle shaft is changed as a complete piece and are no longer available,
second hand spindle shafts are rare in my experience i have only seen one on eBay, in 15 years.
that being said, a good engineering company should be able to replicate what is essentially
a turned shaft, and a couple of turned rings. Bearings, collars and locking rings are all stock parts that can be obtained elsewhere.
The hard part as I am finding is locating an engineering company that will take on one off
pieces of work.
Good luck in your search.
Paul

Imran,
Thank you very much for your help in checking and figuring this out. This was not the reply i got from my own dealers. I will now check with them again, giving the exact product number, and see what this costs. If its too highly priced I will instead consider Shawns offer. Paul, For my own sake I hope you are wrong and Imran is right regarding the spindle ;) Regarding the fence, It's the mountings for the short x-cut fence I'm looking for so I'll check out the part you mention. Thank you for the info. -jay? |

Jay,??
I have to express some frustration as things are deleted from the E shop, the original part number from the parts List won't show up on the web site and the local dealer says there discontinued,
Then you email the factory and get a different answer.
Order the spindle as soon as if they have made another batch, they won't hang around long.
