anyone interested in slider nuts

Mac, I was really tempted with a Covel in new London.? I like the old iron, Doall, Covel, and Really like the Gallmeyer livingston machines.? Finding an old machine that the seller would guarantee tenths is hard and expensive though.? Many Covel had an odd taper on the spindle and a 2.5" bore for the wheels that makes hubs and wheels expensive and hard to find.

Settled for a Kent three axis 10x20.? I'm generally not a Taiwan machine guy but I bought from a retired machinist and the machine was lightly used, had coolant and vacuum and a bunch of accessories and I don't need another project.? Sure doesn't have the cool look of the Covel or Gallmeyer though.? Dave

There is no advantage to a T-nut shape over a flat blank as long as the thickness of the blank is adequate for the threads. If the t-slot is shallow and the extra thickness of the nut is required, then by all means make them stepped…. but that’s the only reason to do it.?

I’ve made hundreds of them and always used a flat design.

milled product is surely beautiful but i honestly wanted to know the benefit of a true t-nut. there is reasonable amount of time involved in a milled nut so it is justifiably expensive.

what i am offering is basic and from my experience they do the job. unfortunately there is nothing special about these nuts, so my attention to detail may not be duper useful, LOL.

i consider it a service to members as there is no money making in this. i will drive 40 mins one way to my friend to cut them on his band saw. then i drill them progressively on DP to the tap size and finally tap them by hand. $15/nut does not come close to what my time alone is worth not to mention tool wear. i am slowly trying to get into metal work and oddly enough a dozen of these is just enough to make it enjoyable.

I like Mac's answer to: Why T-nuts? Because I can.? Otherwise t-nuts might be an adaptation from metal working equipment where the thread depth is more important because they run in steel slots and can be torqued down hard.? Commercially produced t-nuts come in lots of sizes and can be 1040, 4140, surface hardened, thru hardened and probably chinesium.? I made some 1018 cr for my slider.? Good enough for the aluminum track and still machinable on my little mill.? I heat blued them.

So I was just thinking, why not just aluminum flat bar nuts (I have not checked standards for aluminum bar dimensions).? The 20mm threaded hole would be easier to make, will probably last in the light duty x-roll application and not mar the surrounding surfaces.? And for those guys in Florida, they won't rust.? Who wants blued nuts?

I think dissimilar materials is much better.
Aluminum unless anodized will oxidize.

Mark,

i guess i can see benefit in softer material however, that is due to material not due to application. Felder provides T-Nuts for the secured nut for the short xcut fence. these are secured by cap screws so i take it they went with the t nut for space required to recess them. as for guidance, i have zero issues with sliding big squeeze clamps in the slot.

i wondered if they are meant to limit pinch force but i do not think they are made to a tolerance to work as such. not sure if it is even possible because of variation i have seen in slider slot lip thickness.

i have only shipped ~150 in 1.25”x0.5” with no complaints. i just carried fwd the stock established by the original big squeeze. many ways to skin a cat ?

made out of CR1018 0.5” x 1.25” flat bar stock. you need to let me know if your machine is xroll or pre-xroll. i cannot guarantee compatibility with non-felder machines.

nut length is 2” but you can specify any length at $1/in for nuts over 2” in length. if shipping is affected i will let you know.

one tapped hole of your choice in the middle of the nut from std offerings up to M8 or 5/16” and associated coarse thread.

i will entertain your need outside what i have listed above as long as i have the tap, just let me know what you need.

sure does look the same. good that it works for you. mine is fixed now. plan to replace kip levers with cam levers that Brian suggested. that should make it easy to reinstall to the floater nut that i intend to leave in front of short xcut fence nut.

looks like the same handle, here are some pics. Might be due to the round over I have in any case no issues taking on/off.

Mark,

interesting that your come off as it is essentially same size as mine. seems like, you may have seen the pic i sent you where i showed the slight slot i made in the slider handle. the nut you show has a generous round over, perhaps that helped. i also wonder if the handle is slightly diff. does your look like this:
<image2.jpeg>

i know couple of other folks may have this issue. if you do not want to shorten the nut this is an option.

Mark,

i guess i can see benefit in softer material however, that is due to material not due to application. Felder provides T-Nuts for the secured nut for the short xcut fence. these are secured by cap screws so i take it they went with the t nut for space required to recess them. as for guidance, i have zero issues with sliding big squeeze clamps in the slot.

i wondered if they are meant to limit pinch force but i do not think they are made to a tolerance to work as such. not sure if it is even possible because of variation i have seen in slider slot lip thickness.

one i have from felder for KF700 xcut fence (one that floats in slot, not the fixed one) is flat and not t-nut.?
it measured 30x10mm i did not measure the length. no chamfers. BTW, what is the benefit of a T-Nut?

i have only shipped ~150 in 1.25”x0.5” with no complaints. i just carried fwd the stock established by the original big squeeze. many ways to skin a cat ?

i got a question on tolerance for the nut. i had not looked this up before but i found general info for CR1018 in the size i plan to use and tolerance is +0/-0.004. i will verify with supplier on monday and share if it is different.

i also measured the one nut that i built earlier this yr. it meets the tolerance given above. this is a ~4” long nut.

This is silly, but I always thought of that as a tray and not a handle. A tray for what I don't know. If it was a handle, wouldn't it have a hole in it?

A handle with a hole in it makes it really easy to stick your fingers too low and get caught as you are sliding the table forward. I have a handle and got my finger mashed a good one in there… so having a bottom to it to keep errant fingers out of harms way is a good idea.

Good point Brian. I have mashed mine on the outside edge of slider as they encountered the beginning of the base extrusion. So tray is a bonus due to a safety feature J

Fortunately I wasn't moving too fast or I think I would have sheared off the tip of my finger. I have a new handle to make one of these days to make it safer. The original steel plate had so many sharp edges that kept hitting me in the chest (at my height from the chair) that I took it off, maybe not such a good idea in the long run.

Here's the other Austrian version of a handle. Never considered the finger smashing, as this one takes care of that problem as well.
