A3 41D extraction #thicknesser #planer #A3-41D #dustcollection #hammer

Has anyone else noticed that the extraction on this thicknesser is poor? I have it hooked up on a very short run to a portable extractor with 5" hose. The extractor is rated at 2500 m3/h which is well above the 814 required.

If I am machining a wide board (say 300mm / 12") at 1mm the chips build up in the tube quickly. Passes of 2mm make the machine unusable at these widths unless I blow air through the grill from the opposite side towards the extractor. The issue would be much worse at 400mm. ?There are no other machines attached to this extractor so I'm not losing anything there.?

Interested to hear if anyone has noticed this and any possible solutions.?

Hi JP,?

That sounds like a frustrating experience. Which portable extractor are you utilizing??

Prior to acquiring my RL160, I was using my A3-41 combination jointer/planer with an , and was achieving very good results using a 10' (~1m) length of 5" flex hose, taking full-width passes at 2mm depth of cut. Interestingly, the Mini-Gorilla is rated at "only" 583 CFM, which should correspond to ~990 cubic meters per hour, significantly less than your unit.?

I'd suggest checking the following:
-- Are your filters clean?
-- Is there an obstruction somewhere in the hose?
-- Is there an obstruction somewhere in the dust hood??
-- Is it only the A3 41D that is experiencing the issue, or are your other machines similarly struggling with dust collection??

Hope you're able to sort out a solution,
--

All of this seems fine. This is the only machine I am experiencing a problem with but the magnitude of material from the thicknesser is vastly more than any other machine. The closest in material in the planer (jointer) which are typically 1mm passes ¡ª no issues with that.?

My extractor is a Taiwanese white label machine ¡ª I guess you could take the CFM rating with a grain of salt. But it feels like enough. I wish we had access to Oneida where I live.?

I am thinking of replacing the bag filter with a pleated filter to reduce the dust ¡ª perhaps that might help with suction as well.?

Hi JP,

Something is not right. My experience is similar to Tom G. I have no experience with Hammer but before RL125, I used 1000 CFM cyclone. OEM measures 1000CFM with 3ft straight pipe connected to the outlet, so much less with feet¡¯s of ducting and 10¡¯ of 5¡± spiral at the end. It worked adequately without plugging on my 18¡± woodmaster planer (poor collection hood) and also with 20¡± Dual 51.

May want to check if hammer has a baffle in the hood like on my felder and that it is not causing an obstruction or not working as intended.

No obstructions that I can see. ?Here are a couple of images which might help visualise the design. Chips are sucked up through an opening (410 x 84mm) directly above the cutterblock. That inlet is joined to a 120mm tube with a grill on one side and outlet on the other. It's a questionable design. Would be better if it came out the back in the middle but I am trying to make the best of what I have.?

If your planer has the extraction relief grill installed, start your dust collector, place a piece of paper over it and see if the collection is any better.

Regards, Rod.
