Drill presses

I’ve got a Jet drill press that has been pretty crappy since I bought it, and I’ve got a couple old metal working drill presses that are great, but I don’t want to cover them in wood. What drill presses do ya’ll use? I’ve done a little googling and haven’t come up with anything higher end.

Jared, I used to have crappy too. I did a short review of my drill press in Australian Wood Review. A couple of volumes back.?

Parken Drill Press.
Made in Australia.
I have the top of the line model.?
Utterly magnificent.?

I was considering one of the nova offerings but am pretty unsure about. Seems cheap for all the electronics it has. Wondering if anyone has one?

No sweat, I was interested in learning about it.

I’ve owned the Nova Voyager DVR drill press for 4 yrs and have been extremely pleased with it. It replaced a low end Delta drill press that I used for 25 yrs. I really like having no belts on the Nova and ability to vary the speed with a turn of a dial. I find the menu selection for type of drill bit, diameter and material to be drilled very helpful for setting correct rpm. Must confess that I rarely switched the belts and pulleys on the old Delta. My Nova is extremely smooth running, I didn’t installed the keyed chuck that came with it but instead put on an Albrecht keyless chuck.?

I Have the Nova and had the same concerns with the electronics, not a fan of all the settings, I just use on/off and adjust speed via the knob. I also don’t like the soft buttons on the controls but suppose thats a personal preference, theres a certain satisfaction in clicky clicky…

Also the chuck was kinda junky so I replaced it with an expensive keyless Jacobs, overall very little runout if any.?

Did I say I liked it? I do!

Jared,

I bought this a couple yrs ago from a used machinery dealer about 3 hours from me. I really like it, best 2K I have spend on tooling. The flexibility it give for drilling odd angles and locations is amazing. It can be kinda fussy to set up? and re-square but for me it's perfect. I have a friend who has a Nova with all the whizzbang electrical, sometimes I wish I had some of the modern electrical wizardry.

I have the Nova. The speed menu is convenient.

It does not come with a light, which I found to be a problem. I tried a few different add-on lights, but nothing can position right where it is needed most.

Run-out is marginal. Maybe replacing, or at least re-setting, the chuck would help.

The machine senses vibration, and will shut off if it senses excessive vibration. That can be a problem, for instance when using a spade bit or trying to re-enter a hole. If I can find a way to disable that feature I will.

I had a Powermatic briefly. It seemed to be a very solid machine, but apparently PM shipped a container full of presses with a bent piece in the quill advancement mechanism. That one went right back to the dealer.

By the way, the table on the Nova is larger than on many other drill presses. The table is never big enough!

The nova allows you to set speeds for any drill type and size and for any material very quickly. With my other drill presses I never bothered to change the speed because it was too inconvenient to swap belts. This table with a drawer underneath is really handy because it allows you to change the table height without having to remove the bigger table. With the other tables I had, the handle that turns to move the table height would always hit the underneath of the table so I had to remove the table.? Hope this helps. What would be better is the mill that David Best recommends but I never do metalwork.

On the left edge is a place to hook a 2 1/2 inch vacuum cleaner but I have to make an adapter for the Festool vacuum.

Bill, I too have the Woodpecker table and really like the dust collection through the fence. I had the magnetic base light on my old drill press and moved it to the Nova and replaced the old bulb with an led bulb ?

Very nice looking drill press and cabinet.

Hi Jared,
The Nova with the Woodpecker's fence appears a couple of times and that is also my setup.
Plusses for the Nova: direct drive (no power loss in belts); real variable speed from 50 to about 5,000 rpm; easy settings for DRO depth of drilling and drill speed for various materials; generous table size, good up / down action.?
Minusses: Not as stable as the big metal drilling presses (no surprise) and not as precise for milling operations.
Woodpecker?fence does a (surprise! I was not expecting much) great job with the vacuum port, it's easy to set precisely for?light- and medium- duty jobs, with great results - 95% of what I have it do - but a pain to remove and later put back for the heavy- duty jobs. Depending on your task mix, your setup with the two drill presses sounds like this would not be an issue for you.
Best regards
Eric

If I really wanted and needed a a conventional floor standing drill press that is built to an industrial standards (rather than kitchen appliance standards), I’d most likely buy an Ellis drill press - family owned company, built in the USA.

I published this in about 2002. ?

Not much has changed since then in terms of quality drill presses for the woodworking market, and if I were needing a drill press today, I would still go the same route, but probably with a different mill/drill platform. ?Even if I had no interest in metal working - which was the case in 2002 when I got the machine shown at the above link.

Most likely I’d buy something like this. ?

And I’d add a vise and a Woodpecker drill press table (which is what I use on my mill currently when I need to drill wood).

Timely post.? I just ordered the floor standing version of the Nova last week, projected ETA July, "but it might be pushed back longer than that."

I've been researching tables for woodworking.? I've decided to go with Woodpecker's fence at least.? I'm wondering, for those who have their system, whether that dust collection is sufficient?? I was thinking about doing something like this:? (ignore the lame intro) which gives additional dust collection and using the WP fence rather than building one from laminated baltic birch.? ?Is Woodpecker's drawer deep enough to fit a set of Forschner bits?? Thanks.
