Kaeser Airtower

I'm looking at replacing my compressor with a Kaeser Airtower. It comes in several different sizes of motors from 3hp to 7.5hp. Any recommendations on hp? The air tank is the same size regardless of hp.?

I'm also looking at a single phase motor because I don't want to overwhelm my 10hp phase converter.

Any thoughts would be appreciated,

IMHO unless your running it constantly all day it's a big waste of money. Screw compressors suck in low use situations.?

Yes what John said.? A hobbyist friend in Canada put one in and because he didn’t run it a ton it rusted and was ruined within 18 months.? Apparently it needs to get hot enough to boil moisture from the oil or they rust.

Hi Tom,

As John said, these are great if your air requirement is constant and at say 60%-80% of the capacity of the unit you choose. If your air use is intermittent then you are much better off with another type of compressor. First thing you need to know is what is your usage requirement. If it’s under 5cfm on a normal basis, you’d be better off with a Jun or Sil-Air type unit, they use scroll compressors like what are found in AC units and they run pretty much silent. To get a lot of CFM, you will need a unit with maybe 4 or 6 compressor heads though as they don’t produce a whole lot of CFM per head. The unit pictured below puts out 6.36cfm.

If you want to spray, or use air tools, these generally won’t keep up, so better to have a larger piston compressor for those times when you need volume. They make some units now in the 5hp and 60 to 80 gallon tanks that are specifically designed to run quieter, they use large pumps at lower rpm and tend to have silencers on the air intake, which is where most of the noise comes from. This is a unit that uses Eaton compressor heads, puts out 19cfm.

The reason I was looking at the Kaeser is the air dryer that is part of the system. Should I not be concerned about that?

I am the hobbies Joe Jensen spoke about.? But mistake putting a rotary compressor in a home shop.? Mine died in 400 hours ?? Use ..? it was literally a boat anchor.??
Had mine run 10 hours a day it would still be in like new condition.? ?

Parts and oil is ridiculously expensive and the company basically refused to assist. It got a bit nasty but in the end they admitted it was the wrong application for the machine.? ?

Almost everyone I know who put a screw-type compressor in their woodworking shop regrets the decision. ? They are designed for continuous use applications, not intermittent use - in spite of what Kaiser marketing BS claims.

Rick,

Was yours a Kaeser? Did you go back to a standard piston?

Thanks,
Tom

Depends on how heavy your use is and what applications you are going to use it for. Water separators can be enough unless in an extremely humid area.?

There are piston versions with dryer.? And it’s easy to add a dryer.? Rick who replied should add a dryer as he lives on the ocean ?

?

If buying new I would be a Quincy or Ingersol Rand with a dryer from the same maker.? I have an old Quincy with a oil pump like a car or truck for pressure driven lube.? When researching I found an article on compressor robustness written by a compressor dealer.? For every compressor they carry they require the manufacturer to supply one test unit and the test is to open the valve and turn it on, let it run all weekend.? They said very few splash lube compressors can run 48 hrs without seizing.? No Chinese pumps could handle the test.? This was maybe 10 years ago.

One more thought, I’d ask around to find out what compressor dealer is most respected for either Ingersol Rand or Quincy and lean on them to put together a compressor and dryer system for your needs.? I spray and have general use.? I am running a 5HP Quincy with smaller pulleys and a 3HP motor so it’s quieter and it still supplies plenty of air for my needs.? Bigger would just be louder and cycle on for shorter times.? I live in AZ and as much as I’ve wanted to add a dryer because dry air is good, I’ve never really needed one.?

Quincy makes about three levels of compressors.? The QT is the cheap pump, the QR is still the expensive but pressure lubed best pump.? Used QR can be found and are pretty easy to rebuild.? I've done a couple and not a long term project.? Quincy sells rebuild kits with new gaskets and rings.? The valve clean up with Evaporust and sand paper on a flat surface.? The key to dealing with the sound is a slow running pump.? The put put put is actually kind of soothing compared to everything else- including my wife.? Dave

If this is the case then air compressor selection is a no brainer...

In Wichita I would be, but you can always find a dryer. Good industrial ones can be had used, or dare I say it, Harbor Freight sells one and I know quite a few folks that have used them and they seem to work well. Again, CFM capacity will make the difference on what unit you go looking for.

My next door neighbor is a compressor tech. He services Kaiser, Quincy, IR etc. He would tell you the same thing. You'll kill a very expensive screw in a year or two. I worked in a shop with a 10 HP Kaiser, but we had 3 people in the finishing department, and potentially several other DA sanders running. That was borderline enough use for it.

Get a 60-80 gallon upright Quincy. They're pretty quiet, and you'll be happy.

Recommendations on motor size? Separate dryer?

Tom,
I have a 80 gallon, 5 HP with a separate dryer. This is in a 4000 foot coop shop with 6 people potentially working at once. It does the job well. Ours isn't the quietest, but we built an enclosure that helps quite a bit. Not fully enclosed, that would kill it says my neighbor.

A 5 hp two stage will deliver 15-17 cfm, 7.5 hp is in the 20 range.? My dryer is a Hankison Hi Temp refrigerated.? Whether you need the higher input temp depends on how large your tank is and how much air you need.?? I got my compressor and dryer used so took what I could find.? You have to be careful when buying a dryer used.? If they have been ridden hard and put away wet they are not repairable for a reasonable cost.? Dave
