New C3-41 owner

Hello all. ?Just bought a C3-41 (1999) and really like everything but the fence . ?The tightening screw is immovable. ?I would like to fix/replace mine and would appreciate hearing what my options would be. ?I searched and saw the unifence option. ?Are there others? ?

Thank you so much. ?I need some help.

Dan

Thank you?

There is an option from Very Super Cool Tools . They have A Euro style fence, but you'll need a Biesmeyer style rail. They do have instructions on there site on how to diy a rail.

Jay,
Thank you-I'll look into that. ?Would Hammer have an alternative fence?

I made a version of this? on my own design using cams and bearings to lock the fence but this one is quite nice?? The Wood Whisperererer guy has a review

Hammer's fence sucks.? Floppy, deflects like crazy,? won't stand up to wear, seems like it was? designed by an adolescent on bring your kid to work day. It's? sad really because they put a lot of work into the main steel component only? to end up with cheesy junk.

Wow, my manual has a trianglar "planer" fence (which I have) and a "tablesaw fence" (which I don't have).?

Are you all saying neither are good? ? Does that go for the current fences? Assuming they could be mounted on my machine.

Thanks. ?

Dan

HI,
I have a 2000 C3-31, a combnation machine. I love that machine, but the rip fence and the mitre gauge were not usable, at all, I replaced both.
If you have a similar machine the fence rail primary attachment is to the joiner table, so it detaches from a support point near the blade and rotates past vertical when you flip up the forward joiner bed to convert to thickness planing.
Does this sound familar? If so I can walk you through my conversion which works great.
I feel that a Unifence, IF you can find one of these discontinued fences, is perfect for the upgrade.

Brian,
That's it. ?
I would definitely like to follow your process.
I will start Looking for the Unifence.

Can I send you an email or call you? ?

BTW I am in Greenville SC

The Unifence has been out of production for quite some time and can be very hard to find. What you need to find is a fence system, like the Unifence or perhaps the 'VerySuperCool Table Saw Fence' suggested upthread, although there may be an issue with that solution. You need a strong front mounted guide rail and a fence where the 'T' square does not have the left leg of the 'T' so long it interferes with the sliding table.

The Unifence isn't able to move left far enough to use the fence in the tall configuration, I don't know how the VSC fence would work.

It's the fence on the table saw that I? found problematic,?? The JP is? - - ok once you get used to it..? I was used to solid iron supported right over the cutter and the Felder Happer approach is to use aluminum and cantilever the support from a couple feet away from the cutter.? It's workablke but ya gotta get used to not leaning on the fence.

The unifence won't work so well on? your machine because the sliding table is in the way.??? Here is a vid i did of the one I built Note the actual rip fence is not in the center of the rig it is off to the left so that I won't conflict with the sliding table

Hi,

I am also a new C3-31 owner and would be interested in how you upgraded these parts, as my only real beef with the machine is that the combination fence stinks.

Thanks!

My 1999 C3-31 had two issues. The first was that the massive cam clamp, which turned out to be real overkill for the application, moved up and down on a round post that was also the used by the miter gauge quadrant as it's pivot. The effect of clamping stock with the cam clamp was similar to rapping the miter quadrant with a mallet- it always knocked it a few degrees one way or the other. And because in a threaded connection the first threads take more of the load the force? of the cam levered up against the top forward thread and stripped it, followed by the next thread etc. until the top 6 threads or so were gone on the forward side so the post and miter gauge could rattle around as they liked.

?Far the worst design I've seen, I replaced it with an Osborne EB-3 ?

?

For the rip fence I used a NOS Delta unifence, no longer made. An issue is that when you want to thickness plane you start by flipping the rear joiner table up and it supports the fence rail which is cantilevered from the joiner table to the saw blade, so the fence rail is beyond vertical when planing. Whatever system you pick will likely have to be front rail only and wants a stout rail.

A discussion of various fence options for the Hammer B3 is here:

and?

And an installation sequence for the unifence on a B3 is here:

I like the unifence and it hasn't disappointed me yet. Perhaps this information will get you started and if you need more just ask.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for all the info!

Hmmm .. first post... just bought a C3 31 Comfort and going to get it on Monday... already having second thoughts about the purchase considering all the negative comments about the rip fence...?

Had a General 3hp cabinet saw before.? Never an issue with the fence flexing.? :(

Very happy with my C3 31. Like others have stated, using the rip fence is a learning curve. If pressure is applied against the fence in the area just before the blade, flex is not an issue. If flex is a problem for a specific cut, place a Magswitch type device behind the distal end of the fence to anchor it.

On a slider the rip fence is just a bump stop if you use the machine correctly. Most complaints come from those that don't understand the proper operation and have just ungraded from old style cabinet saws.?

Along John’s comments, your first purchase should be a pair of parallel guides. ?Brian Lamb, of Lamb Toolwords, makes an excellent set.

The length of the slider impacts the use of the rip fence.? I have a 10' slider and? it is too short some of the time.? I would not lose sleep until you have used the machine.? You don't put much lateral pressure on a rip fence unless you plan to use a power feeder and then almost every fence made needs support unless it locks in the back.? Dave

Thk you for the replies. I’m recently retired and have been contemplating this sliding combo for a decade. Looking forward for the first project :fritz and franz jig. Will do more reading on FOG.?
