Some questions on the Overhead Guard
My K700S is due here in 2 days, so next week will be consumed with assembly, repositioning some things and hooking up the dust collection - which brings me to a couple questions.
I could not get the Felder Overhead Guard since it was only available from Delaware and that was $500+ in shipping to my house so I was looking at a 2K total expenditure.
Needless to say, I would rather spend that on other accessories.
I have some spare 2x2 tubing of various gauges, so I am thinking of making my own overhead guard as an interesting side project.
I don't like any of the aftermarket one's I have seen and being as I have all the steel laying around that I need, I could save a lot doing this project myself.
?
My questions are:
?- Does anyone know the measurement of the Felder guard from center of front wheel to center of back wheel??
?- Also, the approximate thickness of the guard - it looks to me to be about 2 inches or so.
Looking at the Felder, SCM, and Altendorf guards, they all angle back maybe 15 degrees or so.?
Do you think this is for a sleeker look or maybe allows for a bit easier lifting of the guard.?
I don't see a reason why you could not have one that raised and lowered at 90 degrees to the table if the design worked out that way - but maybe I'm missing something there.
?
I will play around with a few designs but if I don't like my end result, I won't use it. The last thing I want to do is detract from the appearance of such a nice machine.
?
As always, any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dennis

If the guard is set too low and the wood/material runs into the guard while you are pushing it through, the "angled" guard movement will naturally/automatically lift up from the forward pressure of the wood and allow the wood to flow underneath.? If the guard lifts at 90 degrees, the wood will just run into it and stop, unless there is a rather large wheel on the front to act as a "lever".

Denno,
?
Here are some shots of my home-made guard. ? Having used bulky (wide) guards for years, I wanted to make one as skinny as possible so it could still be used for relatively thin rips while keeping the hose high up out of my way and sightline. ? ? However, this design did cost me a bit in terms of good dust collection at the hood as I am only feeding it with a 3" hose. ?I know from my own experience that if the guard is in my way, ?I won't use it. ? A skinny guard with a high hose input means that I will leave it place 90% of the time. ? Your priorities may be different. ?Mine tilts, pivots, and telescopes in and out as well as up and down. ? It is also hinged at the wall so it can be completely folded out of the way for shaper operations or cuts on very tall projects. ?Don't forget to make it long enough to guard the scoring blade as well as the main blade! ? Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the information and pictures - looks great.
Just found out none of the blades will be arriving with my saw tomorrow so looks like I will have more time that I thought before I can start using the saw.
So I will start getting serious about building this overhead guard.
I wish they had let me know about the out-of-stock condition a week or so ago.
Anyway, I will start looking at sources other than Felder for at least a good combo blade so I can complete the setup with some test cuts and start using it.
?
Looks like Forrest may have a few 300mm combos in stock.
?
Thanks

开云体育I agree with Paul that your best choice would be a Tenryu 300 mm blade. ? There’s lots of chatter about this in the FOG message archive. ?Keep in mind that if you buy anything larger than 300 mm the blade will not fully descend below the surface of the cast-iron top of the machine. ? 开云体育I have many blades and I find that the Tenryu rip blade works fine for everything I do including crosscuts for glue ups…I’m extra work adverse as well… Bill Belanger

开云体育Jacques It’s a good way to get your hands dirty that’s for sure. Rusty obviously has numerous skills in Metal working and other skills One finding the materials developing a design ability to cut weld on drill mill grind That’s all the exciting part of it. If I get a chance I’ll take a picture of the overhead saw guard I built.?My compelling reason was I hate shit that wiggles metalworking that is. Howdy folks. I’m preparing to downgrade my 49” k700s to 31”. I ordered a table and bar, but the guard holder is more expensive than the entire guard assembly on the Felder Shop, which isn’t cheap.
So, I’m left the choice of building a holder or chopping the 49 down. I HATE the idea of cutting it, but i want it to be sturdy and don’t trust myself to build one to my standards. Does anyone know, or can someone quickly measure, the length of the arms on the 31? I’m thinking i just need to remove 18” and re-drill/slot-out new mounting holes but I thought it would be smart to check with you guys. Or…. Better yet… is there someone in California who wishes they had upgraded the capacity on their saw? I’d be open to trade! |
Hi Denno
When looking for blades for my Felder saw, I found Freud must make a lot of the blades for Felder.?
Some seemed to be the same spec or so close that it made no difference (to me at least, as it may have only been a small difference in the tooth count).??
With the market being so small here in NZ, there isn't that much of a range available that's available ex-stock.
Good luck with getting everything you need as soon as possible so you can start making with your new saw.
Cheers

开云体育I have been very happy with the Forrest blades I have and they have done a bang up job of sharpening the Felder blades too. |
