Articulating Shop Light

Good Sunday all,

I have a spot in my shop that I want to mount a decent sized articulating light (maybe industrial...something I could swing overhead for a J/P, bandsaw, and drill press). My internet searches have come up with dock lights but thought I would ask what others might be using in their shop. Thanks.

Look for a ceiling hung dentist light…. I know a couple of guys that use them around their machines. Quick Look on Marketplace turned these up:

FWIW, we got 3-winged LED light fixtures for our garage. The 3 wings go from horizontal to vertical. I was literally shocked how bright my 2 car garage is with these. It appears to be brighter than my shop where I have 34 4’ LED tubes.

Those triple wing fixtures are awesome. My experience is the same.?

I’ve also been in some shops with dentist lights, though they were all for things like solder stations. I’ve not seen one yet for general spot lighting.?

Jim,

This is what I have. It must be the advantage of direction as these are 5K lumens or my 4’ LED bulbs are not as many lumens as advertised. We are talking 3 fixtures to 17. Granted the shop is 70% bigger but still ….

Thanks Brian...I'll take a look at Marketplace and other areas for a dentist light...that could certainly work. It might also add to a new income string if I can find a suitable chair! ;)

Hi Imran,

I have seen these before and I might be able to incorporate a few into my shop. Right now I am looking for an articulating arm set-up but this could possible work as the light at the end of whatever arm I end up with (shop made or purchased).

Larry,

I re-read your original post again. Your situation may be different but I move my drill press light all the times all around the chuck. This may be easier done with a dedicated light at the DP vs an overhead where your own self is sometimes in the way.

My shaper sits under the stairs which are 4’ wide, so shop light mounted 10’ high does not come in well. I just mounted two 4’ long single tube LED fixtures, one on each side of the spindle. This machine has the best light in my shop.

I also had to add dedicated light to my miter saw once I built a dust collection box around it. I added a fixed light on left side but an clamp on gooseneck on the right because the motor housing created shadow with a fixed light.

So just throwing out some ideas, that may or may not be helpful in your situation.

I looked into medical lights and didn’t like what I found for cost. Several thousand bucks, which is ok but I wanted a light I could use across the shop to help my aging eyes with joinery and hand tool work. Also looked at Hoffman task and inspection lights. Nice as well but I didn’t find the mounting options ideal for ceiling mount. So I needed them to be something I could afford 10-15 of. I settled on cheaper studio lights. not dust rated mind you but I hang them off the ceiling off joists using any of the endlessly available studio mounts using a 5/8th stud and receiver. Impact brand wall/ceiling mount paired with an impact magic arm are what I settled on. The manfrotto magic arm is slightly more sturdy but not worth the extra cost. I ended up with aputure amaran 200x s lights which output about 25000 lumen, if I am recalling correctly. Dimmable, Bluetooth controllable, 200w led. It They are like $350 and work great for working and also couple with bowens mount light modifiers, umbrellas, narrow beam spot light adapters like fresnel, barn doors, or reflectors. Hard or soft diffuse lighting is possible. Obviously they are good for filming your work if that’s your interest. There are also fb adjustable ones that aren’t as bright and cost more; these are white balance adjustable. Machines I set to 4000k, hand work at night I approach tungsten. Filming in 4k /24 I set them to 3200.?

more expensive models meant for production work are going to be dust resistant, but I run a clean enough shop and can air blast them clean if needed. Let you know if they all die or catch on fire in a few months.

Oh these are also app controlled so you can save and set a scene instantly. I think I’m approaching 1m lumens in 800 square feet when everything is on. My eyes love the extra cri. The difference between 80 and 95 cri is the difference between my eyes tolerating light and feeling great. Anecdotally.

I will also mention I had a led dock light and it was mediocre light quality but cheap and easy. Good enough for machine work. Not good enough for sub mm hand tool work.

Larry, if you are planning on doing a shop build of something similar to the medical light in Brians ?post, try going onto YouTube and searching for "overhead dust collection boom arm". these involve much the same structure and there are a bunch of ideas for a shop built boom arm.

For overhead dust collection boom arms or any boom arm where you want the most flexibility of positioning, that means an articulating boom arm. ?For articulating boom arms used for dust collection, the middle knuckle requires a lot attention to detail to have the best function as the hose must flex in both directions significantly and not kink or spring back etc. ?For an electrical cord only, not so challenging.

As for the mag mounted LED lights used for drill press, bandsaw etc, there was a recent discussion on Sawmillcreek.

I have a SuperNova and really like it. ?I purchased it some time ago and it seems like there are now quite a few inexpensive alternatives. ? I do not have reason to believe that any of them are as good as the SuperNova, but perhaps good enough and less expensive. ?Seems like for drill press or bandsaw task lighting, it would be way easier to mount dedicated LED lights than have an articulating boom arm, but that is just my 0.02.
