Dovetail (S Clamp) rip fence extension (hunting for a Unicorn)

 

Long ago, Felder made a male / female dovetail fitting extension piece in cast iron to extend the capacity of the rip fence on the universal machine.
Neglectfully I never bought one at the time, but years later one would be particularly useful.
Before i dig the milling machine out of storage and push my engineering skill to there limits I will raise 3 questions to the group.
?
Is there one of these lying dusty and un used on a shelf that someone would like to part with? If so can we discuss a price?
?
If you are unwilling to part with the one you have, would you be willing to post an accurate set of cross section dimensions sufficient to replicate this .
?
Apologies if this has been raised in the past but a search of previous posts has not yeildd a result for the dovetail dimensions.

Lamb Parallel Fence Old Style

Does anyone have a Lamb Tool Works old style Parallel Fence they would like to sell? I need the F-style. - If you have the newer x-roll style let me know. Perhaps I can simply swap out the attachment block to the f-style.

As it was mentioned earlier here, Nova’s US arm is going thru chapter 11 reorganization. Appears they liquidated Nova Viking via Grizzly. It cost me $1187 delivered with lift gate charge ($500 off list price). Bit of a let down, I was told by Grizzly CS that extended warranty is included in purchase price but it turned out not to be the case.

I was able to assemble the unit myself. Just scooted the column to the edge of the styrofoam so I can attach the base. Then lifted it up.



Talking about the base it is not as big or as substantial as my current Delta 17-900. Although, I found it to be stable. For heavy and long metal work, it would be best to secure the base someway. It is not mentioned anywhere but it must have soft start as there is no startup torque induced vibration, something I am used to experiencing on my Delta.



Couple of minor issues. Morse taper was scratched. Nova sent a replacement, took longer than I like but there was no resistance. Apparently they are working with a skeleton crew. I could not find a place to attach the chuck key holder other than removing one of the screws that holds the top cover and screwing it in that location. No mention in the manual either. I prefer a simple magnet for this but here is how I mounted it.



The manual is decent but not perfect by any means. I will need to come up with a speed chart that I can mount on the DP. My Delta has one on the machine and it is very handy. One other thing, it requires a 3900 J surge protector. This Eaton model set me back $85. I wanted a smaller unit but could not find one, I guess it is not a big deal.



There is no runout to speak of at the taper.


Not sure how important this is, but the chuck outside is within 0.001”.



Then I chucked a new 15/32 bit and checked runout on shank on the top and it measured +/- 0.001”. I don’t have a precise shaft to indicate down couple of inches to see how accurate it really is but so far so good.



I thought that I would need to buy an expensive chuck to get this type of performance, so naturally I am very satisfied.

Just drilled the first hole (1/2”) in the plastic. Very nice and crisp hole. It is to install a panel mount fuse holder. The plastic cover could not be easily held perfectly vertical the way it is constructed and I noticed that the laser is slightly off. I will try a flat piece to double check before messing with re-alignment of the laser.

HTH anyone, considering to buy a Viking. I assume Voyger is just as good if not better.

That is what they use a lot in EU, makes delivery so much easier indeed. I have not seen them in the US at all (at least not at my almost ending two weeks in Las Vegas).

I posted replacing this hose few months ago. I was able to do it without removing the power feeder. I had to remove the 2 studs and pull out the plastic cover. I am not sure if the plastic cover needed to be removed or I decided to do it because I wanted to clean it. The PF hangs off the F channel and I kept the PF in a location that kept pressure on the bottom of the bracket such that it was being driven into the machine.

I will find my post after dinner and share. Hopefully, I put more details in it.

IIRC, the hose is 90 mm and it was a pain to get the 2 ends connected. I am remembering more as I type. I did removed the dust collector port in the process.

Hi Aaron,

It looks like an alternate rear piece. The screw hole matches pic below. As mentioned earlier, I can only think of it providing access for the data cable.

I would agree on the safety issue.? My K3 was delivered via lift gate service and the create barely fit on the lift gate, and the driver did not have a narrow pallet jack so he was lifting it off center.? It made it with no damage but was a tense few moments.

I have a 2007 K500 with around 32" capacity though the stroke is longer and it can make longer cuts with jigs.? I got it used.? I can move it around with a pallet jack and it never loses accuracy when I do.? The footprint is square.? The rip fence is annoying in my cramped space because it's longer than I need because if I need to rip more than 25" I can do it in other ways.? I'll be moving into a larger shop but I may keep it rather than getting a bigger stroke one because I built a nice vertical that I'll be able to access better in the larger space by not falling into the trap I'm in now of having junk stored in front of it all the time.?

My major annoyance with the short stroke slider is not the capacity, it's that attaching/detaching the crosscut fence takes about 40 seconds and if you don't your ripping capacity is limited by how far you can get the carriage fence out of the way.? I don't have the outrigger anyway, just a little aluminum thing I made that sticks out for support, and big pieces get heavy so crossutting a 4-8 sheet for tall pantry sides is not something I'd want to do even with the stroke capacity.? If I had an outrigger and more space maybe I'd be more open to that.? ? The short stroke is practical for smaller pieces and the X-roll doesn't stick out enough to be a hindrance to moving around my body or things in the shop.?

I almost always buy used machinery but buying a large used slider from a professional shop is not something I am sure I want to do.? ?

?????? You might also try "light" MDF. It's my go to for cabinet doors and drawer fronts for veneering. Light MDF is a lot easier on your back to carry around.? Also, when you get drawers loaded with stuff, I don't like a heavy drawer front that adds to the total weight of the drawers. It is slightly softer, but I don't think it affects durability much. Also don't forget to get some "backer veneer"? for the back sides of your work. You can use a cheaper species of veneer than your face side. Tom Ruth

??????????? I've used Better bond x-press with some success. But if you're veneering anything large, it's pretty much impossible to get it rolled out before it starts to set up. If you're doing one or two drawer fronts at a time it's definitely quicker and is very thick, so you get? less bleed through. There's no mixing so that's a time saver. Unibond 800 is better for larger work. Tom Ruth

I use a 4" hose for the over-head guard with a custom-modified adapter and then straight into Nordfab duct.? I basically took a heat gun to a Powertec 4" elbow from Amazon to stretch and mold that onto the rectangle fitting on top of the blade guard.?? It took about an hour to do this - I got the idea from PK when he had one on his Format4 saw.? I'm using a 5HP cyclone with a VFD, but for tablesaw operations I run the VFD at about 45-48 for reduced noise purposes (given me only about 75-80% of the total dust collector velocity).? This scenario still give me more than enough suction for the overhead dust collection.? I'm not sure what the velocity actually is, but the larger 4" hose is definitely less restrictive which equates to more velocity at the blade guard itself.

This does a good job when doing normal cuts.?? If I'm trimming the edge of a piece (like cutting about 1/16" off the wood), it still sprays a bunch of debris forward.?? For this, I move the fence right up against the blade guard.?? This helps, but it will still throw some amount of dust forward.
