Re: Festool joining 2x hoses -7m long
Chris,
The reusable bags are really only intended for tools that make chips such as the Kapex, router, etc. These bags clog really quickly and you lose tons of suction if you use them for sanding. For fine sanding dust the regular bags are the way to go. A1 Mate makes reusable bags for a fraction of the cost. I have not used them so I can't speak to their quality. Steve |
Re: Festool joining 2x hoses -7m long
I can't believe how complex the whole system is. I'm new to festool. I definitely agree that the 36mm will be way too hard on the orbital. That's why I want the additional hose that will fix to the the end of the 36mm. This way I get the extra length and can leave the 27mm hose suspended off the roof just above workbench that I can let down as I need it. It can permanently live up there.
Is there any good generic reusable bags other than the $400 festool one? 36L |
Re: FSC chain of custody certification
Good evening Andy,
Thanks for the background. Given your "previous life" you have first-hand experience on the challenges related to certification. Although I do not know the context details for the seafood industry, I would guess that "the road was probably bumpy for a while" until some type of equilibrium was achieved.? As for forest products, there are other certification bodies/labels/logos available globally. The Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) are two such examples of certification available in North America. I would think that you should be able to source the products you need with either one of the three programs, but you have more knowledge on local availability than I have. J. ? |

Re: FSC chain of custody certification
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi?JacquesYou are absolutely right - my previous career was in certification albeit a different commodity (seafood) and it appears that FSC has a similar path to that industry certification, initially targeting larger producers 5 million annually and up. ?More recently established certification programs have recognized the need for certification for smaller entities. ?FSC like many have gone to group certifications in order to encompass smaller producers, and manufacturers. Many cabinet shops (or builtins like me) would likely fall into a group management scenario. ?FSC offers both general certification for forestry companies, and a chain of custody certification for manufacturers and secondary manufacturers. ?This certification would allow a company to publicize their affiliation with FSC, or at least that my current understanding. ?You cannot (at least through my supplier) purchase FSC branded and verified products without supply a certification number, and subsequently cannot use their logo or make assurances that products are certified. That said, I¡¯d be open to suggestions for other proven sustainable sheet goods (and hardwood), available in the US¡. I usually purchase non formaldehyde glue sheet goods, Columbia Forest Products - Europly etc and?although these are available through my supplier in both FSC and non FSC - I¡¯m not generally aware of another brand of plywood or certification that has any real sustainable rigor in the US. ? Thanks!

Re: FSC chain of custody certification
Andy,
I played in the margins of the certification processes in the early stages; probably 20 years ago or so. My recollection is that ? large ? operations were the target with a view to influence decisions in the marketplace. I am unclear whether you are looking into certification from a manufactured product supplier or from a forest owner perspective. In the event that obtaining recognition from either FSC or other forest certification systems is either not possible or too complicated, you should still be able to position your products along the principles you espouse. One instance would be through the use of certified products (FSC or others) in the making of your products, or by conducting your forest operations or procurement along the lines of accepted sound forest management practices. As is the case for many things in life (and in business), the devil is in the details. I hope these few lines will be helpful. Regards, Jacques ? |
Re: Festool joining 2x hoses -7m long
For Kapex, the straight 36mm hose is the best (most CFM, which is what you need).? You can use the 36 on a random orbit if you really want with a hose adapter like these:
The challenge with the bigger hoses is that they are heavier and stiffer.? It's harder to use a random orbit sander and ensure that the weight/stiffness of the hose does not pull/tilt the sander down.? Maneuverability is much more difficult.? The straight 27mm hose (or a 27/32) is much easier to handle for a random orbit. If you wanted only one hose, the 36/32 hose is larger and has much higher CFM than the 27mm variants.? It tapers down to 32mm on the last third of the hose length and is more flexible/lighter than the straight 36mm, but still not as easy to use with a random orbit as the 27mm variants.? You can still use the adapter for connecting to a random orbit. The 27mm variants all have the small diameter squeeze on connector on the end.? The 32 and 36 variants have a larger opening where you can attach different adapters if you need. For random orbit, I generally run the Festool extractor at about 50-60%.?? If you are using a 400+ grit sandpaper, you will probably want to turn it down to 30-40% (as the 400 grit has a much tighter seal with the wood). If I am using a Rotex sander in "Rotex mode", I generally want to turn up the extractor to 100% speed because you really need it at that point.? Since the rotex pad is spinning as well as orbiting, you don't have the suction problem with the wood that you do with a normal random orbit. I have all 3 hoses in my collection and use all of them in different scenarios. -Aaron |

Hammer K3 ZCI (Mk2)
I built a new ZCI for the K3 today. The reason for this was to improve two aspects of the old design.
The Mk1 solution was to narrow the gap between blade and wagon with a section of aluminium ... ![]() The reason for the aluminium was that the thin sliver of insert closest to the wagon, as seen below, vibrated and then exploded when it touched the spinning blade! ![]() The aluminium on the Mk 1 did improve on the original insert by closing up the side closest to the wagon, and prevented almost all but the thinnest offcuts dropping through the gap.? However, the design retained the bevel for a mitre cut - which rendered that side of the blade decidedly non-ZCI! The new Mk 2 ZCI is also made from a Hammer blank for a dado blade, and uses 3mm aluminium to close off the wagon side, but the aluminium is now a L-section. The reason for this shape is two-fold: it is stiffer and will not vibrate, and it will prevent any very fine slivers falling through. Importantly, the rip fence side of the blade is now sealed ... Regards from Perth Derek |
Re: Festool joining 2x hoses -7m long
On my kapex, the 36mm works way better for collection than the 27.? Agree, covering the ribs up makes it SO much nicer not to be catching on everything. Also, you can get an aftermarket hose cover. On Sat, Apr 27, 2024 at 5:01?PM Patrick Kane via <pwk5017=[email protected]> wrote:

Chris, I don¡¯t know about theKapex but the 27 mm hose tends to clog when I use an up cut spiral bit aggressively on my OF2200. The vac come standard with a 3.5m 27mm hose, but you can also get a 3.5m 36mm hose. I've read that the 36mm hose is the way to go with the saw, however with an orbital sander, that size hose would be too big and annoying - 27mm would be better. |
