Re: Felder Shipping Charge

I’m positive Mac posted a good source... only 124k parts/tools to sift through.
My choice would be to go buy an inexpensive socket and cut it down to make it fit that application. Doesn’t look like a castle nut to me, but I find new types of fasteners monthly. ?

Good luck.

?

In my bandsaw rebuild it's time for the electrical and to test (anxiety) the motor.? I could not get the starter to work so I took it to a motor shop and they found that someone (before me) had taken it apart and reassembled wrong and they found one contactor is frozen.? The controls are 1967 vintage Cutler Hammer.? ?

When I spoke with Tannewitz they strongly advised that this saw with a 900 RPM direct drive motor runs too fast for resawing.? You may recall that I recently bought a 32" Northfield bandsaw and they asked what I was going to do and unprompted told me that the 900 RPM motor would run the blade too fast for resawing.? First, why would faster matter? I've found with my other bandsaws moving the wood slower results in a cleaner cut.? Are they saying that because the saws don't have the HP or build to feed the stock fast enough for the blade design?

Anyway I have a three options:
1) Replace the guts of the Cutler Hammer starter with new. If so what brand starter parts would you recommend?? Maybe just have the motor shop do this?
2) Replace the starter with a new one. If this, what brand seems so many are now selling Chinese stuff which I am leery of.
3) Replace the starter with a VFD.? If I do this, I assume need some kind of fuse to protect the motor or can I just program the VFD for max current?? I would want to use a NEMA4 enclosure VFD I think to keep dust out but is this overkill??

Hi Greg,

An easier to implement option, not as elegantes as adding a motor, is to modify the crank to allow use of a hand drill. If interested ask here and hopefully someone will post details.

Jarrett,

Look up castle nut wrench. I learned about them right here. The xcut fence stops on the outrigger has castle nut on each end. Felder wrench for saw blade change has one built in it for the outrigger. I am not sure how you measure the size. Some here likely will post or you can google it.
