Mark,

I don¡¯t quite understand this group, but I¡¯m getting emails back only from conversations/categories I¡¯d joined in. Nothing from other sections, is there a way to change that so all posts go to all members? If not, this isn¡¯t the one we want to consider.

Re: AD741 slow to spin up

Dave,

I have given up on Felder and ordered two of these from Amazon. ?Figure I might as well replace both while I'm at it. ?Do you know if there is a polarity that must be respected when installing these? ?I have cut off the cable that attached to the old capacitor and I need to know if it matters which of the two wires is attached to which terminal of the new capacitor. ?I will also need to figure out how to attach the wires to the terminals on the end of the new capacitors. ?I sure am grateful for suggestions, because I'm not very knowledgeable about this electrical stuff.

K940s

Hey fellas,

New member and first time posting here, though I¡¯ve been reading all of the back and forth for the past week or so.

So, I¡¯m buying a slider. It was a debate considering I purchased a large (16¡¯x6¡¯) capacity cnc towards the beginning of last year. But it seems there are things the slider can do much faster than my jointer or cnc.

I work almost exclusively in solid wood mostly making table tops from slabs, but I have some demand for solid wood cabinets which I typically turn down because I hate using our sawstop with sled to square pieces, switch to dado, back to regular blade etc. So clearly the slider can square cuts and straight line rip quickly.

My salesman priced the k940s at only 2k more than the k700 citing the larger blade capacity as the only reason to go with the 940. Does anyone have experience with both saws? The 940 was discounted from 19 or 20k to 15k and the 700 from 16k to 13k with similar features. He is also throwing in 3 blades.

I¡¯m also debating between 10¡¯ and 12¡¯ sliding capacity.

Any thoughts?

Cool, 20 minutes driving for me to get to their office. I look at shaper tooling in their catalog, lots of various cutters. My Felder Mississauga sales person recommended Royce-Ayr to me before.

When you start out with a shaper the options can be overwhelming and there is no one best solution for everybody. The decisions should be based on your needs not on what someone else uses. An example is a lot of people use Rangate for their European Window/door cutters/experience which in my world are of no use what so ever. You might try asking about specific tasks you want to accomplish and get tooling suggestions from there. There is a lot tooling that is easy to aquire and won't break your bank account.

If it was me I would purchase minimum of 40 mm bore and sleeve to spindle size, this gives you many more options with your cutters for more applications.

My personal plan, when I get around to it, is to sell the Hammer dado and a couple of Rangate 160mm adjustable slot cutters that are not used (only work on the shaper) then get the Felder 228mm which will serve both. Glen the 200mm dado set is shim based and actually 2 separate and adjustable cutters within there given cut range. They are not added together to get the 20mm cut. Not bad for the price. You just missed one that sold $500.00 on Sawmill Creek Forum. It gives a good cut and has good depth with bat ears in the final cut.

The Dado unit for the Hammer and Felder K500 series is a 3 pcs set that is also shim based. With it you have to put the right pcs together to get the desired thickness. I have had the Hammer unit since the days I owned a K500S and it works OK. I much prefer to use a Freud SD508 Super Dado I had drilled and pin holed, the best cut I've seen with a dado and no bat ears.

I guess my confusion is on the pricing. it seems like I am just stacking two setups together to get my 3/4 Dado which to me makes it shim based in which I prefer.

Felder 12" rip,?

Felder 12" crosscut. It will crosscut both hardwood and veneer stock. use scoring with veneer, I've also in a pinch ripped hardwood, cut melamine with scoring, no chipout

Felder Dado set? 200mm. I've used this unit and it performs great and can be used to setup shaper with 30mm spindle. It will cover 90% of all dado and grooving needs that are typically encountered.

Another blade is Leitz 12" Glueline, that again IMHO is a superior performer.

Your right Mac 228 mm in diameter, I had 8" stuck in my head which is 200 mm. The one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that with insert tooling you have 4 sides of sharp and when there done its just replace the carbide. My personal plan, when I get around to it, is to sell the Hammer dado and a couple of Rangate 160mm adjustable slot cutters that are not used (only work on the shaper) then get the Felder 228mm which will serve both. Between the Freud dado set and Felder I can cover a lot of bases. In the meantime I have access to a Felder Dado when needed.

Far as I know Felder is 228 dia with four side or scribe or kerf cutters ?on a side and they produce ?a fine cut on cross cut ?ply and they should produce ?? ears to get the fine cut. The cutters are cutting in 2 axis not like a traditional one axis wing cutters.?
I don't get the big freak out about bat ?? ?ears when would you even see them that's my question?

Royce-Ayr did the mod but any competent blade shop should be able to have it done. The boring and the pinholes cost $125..00 CDN because of the number of components. I like the Freud SD508 because of tooth count and the fact it has 4 wing chippers instead of the usual 2 most others use.

Thank you John for the clarification. Go figure I would miss a deal. I will look at the Freud set. If i may ask who did your Drill and pin modifications?

Glen the 200mm dado set is shim based and actually 2 separate and adjustable cutters within there given cut range. They are not added together to get the 20mm cut. Not bad for the price. You just missed one that sold $500.00 on Sawmill Creek Forum. It gives a good cut and has good depth with bat ears in the final cut.

The Dado unit for the Hammer and Felder K500 series is a 3 pcs set that is also shim based. With it you have to put the right pcs together to get the desired thickness. I have had the Hammer unit since the days I owned a K500S and it works OK. I much prefer to use a Freud SD508 Super Dado I had drilled and pin holed, the best cut I've seen with a dado and no bat ears.

thank you John,
One question on the Dado set. Is it shim based set up or rotational expansion based, and you thought on 6.3 to 12 or 12 to 20 I see the latter of the two as I plan not to back cabinets with 1/4 back panels anymore.
I guess my confusion is on the pricing. it seems like I am just stacking two setups together to get my 3/4 Dado which to me makes it shim based in which I prefer.

Thanks Glen

Glen get the basics so you can get the machines setup. Keep it simple to start, most Felder blades work really well and will get you started and are typically easy to aquire. If you want some wacky Japanese blade that takes six months get and you have sell your firstborn to buy it can wait. Most saw/shaper tooling on your side of the border is available next day and can be acquired as needed IMHO

Mark,
I am following your venture here. I am where your at.. make choices. I can tell you without the people here I would have made some bad decisions. I have learned more from this forum than anywhere else.
David Best and many others here know there stuff. some day I will too, but for now these guys helped me greatly in deciding what i wanted to buy and needed. I am at the point of you maybe, time to buy the stuff for the machines. Blades, Cutterheads, ect. My machines are here on pallets and I need to figure out some tooling before commissioning. This will be an interest part of the project.

David's explanation is the best I have ever seen. I think what you really have to ask your self is what type of work are you going to do with it and will it help that process? Projects in my shop seem to always be one offs where nothing ever fits any standard not have any repetition. This type accessory I think is very nice but for my work it would be a complete waste of $$. YMMV. Good luck making your final choices. I am on a quest to figure what blades to buy...

Re: groups.io for Felder Woodworking?

Allen,

I hate to leave emacs -- http is ruining the internet.

But I do think most forum platforms have email delivery, and I don't think this group would be interested in a platform that didn't have email message delivery.

I would also be willing to contribute. But what matters more to me is
the way conversations are delivered. If I have to go to a website and
carefully scan every new topic that's been posted to extract the parts
that are worthwhile, that's a poor use of time. Eventually I'm going to
be unwilling or unable to spend that time. That issue is precisely why
I look at the Festool Owners Group (among others) only every week or
two, but I keep up with the Felder Owners Group every day.

The big advantage of email delivery is that email software is highly
optimized for dealing with hundreds of messages a day, sorting them out
into what's important and what's irrelevant, and even saving (locally)
the stuff that's crucial for future reference. The Web forum software
that I've seen is far slower and more cumbersome.

Those of you who've been around for a while may remember the heyday of
Usenet newsgroups. Software like trn ("threaded read-news") allowed me
to sift through thousands of postings every day, displaying the threads
I wanted to follow automatically while deep-sixing the rest (without
preventing me from going back to search for them and look at them in the
future if I changed my mind). All with a user interface that was
concise and INSTANTLY responsive, because you never had to wait for a
message to be delivered. If such a thing exists for web forums, I'd use
it enthusiastically, but I just haven't seen it. In the meantime, email
delivery with a website fallback is the next-best option.

Those of you who use tiny screens without keyboards as your only
interface to the Internet probably feel differently. For you I can only
recommend voice-controlled AI. :-)

Re: KF 700 SP options

I have over head guard on my KF700sp. The splitter I have does not have hole. It is 2.8mm, see attached picture.

Sample FOG on discourse.org platform

I was curious about discourse.org, so I set one up, which took all of 5 minutes:

Currently, it's configured to allow self-registration without admin approval.?

I am going to create admin accounts for a few obvious folks here. You'll get an email from discourse.? Ignore it if you don't want that.? Those admins can create other admins and/or do anything else.

Just to be perfectly clear, I only set up demo for benefit of interested folks here.? I am not actually starting an alternative site. I am not endorsing discourse.org. I am not suggesting I would want an admin role in a future site.? ?I will kill this discourse site in 13 days when the free trial ends (unless some quorum here suggested otherwise and someone wants to take control of it)
