Re: Blade Noise, with Audio!
Hello Geoff,
Great recording, thought I was in my shop! The saw sounds the same as my Felder and other commercial saws I've heard. One thing I have noticed about having a small 200 sq. ft. shop is the noise is magnified a couple of db more than in larger shop areas. Since insulating, I have powered up the saw in the evening (when things are fairly quiet outside) and after closing the doors and windows I've gone out to see what the neighbors might have to listen to. It wasn't any louder than the neighbor's dog when it barks when left in their garage at night. Besides I figure that if there is an intruder out there and he hears the sound of that blade power up.... he won't be around for long. I did a calculation using pi to determine the number of additional ft. a 12" blade will run over a 10" blade for 1 minute at 3440 RPM. And the answer is: Approx. 1800 lineal ft. per minute, in other words almost a third of a mile. It will be interesting to hear whether others who listen to your recording are getting the same volumn level. Rod B. Wow - yet again I am thoroughly impressed by the knowledge and interest of
those participating in the forum. I haven't checked my e-mail for a few days due to long busy days at work. Let me try to respond to the questions/thoughts in one message instead of a whole bunch. Tom - Yes, motor speed at 60Hz is 3440. I like your idea of a PDF searchable parts catalog/owner's manual. As far as the owner's manual goes, Acrobat does a nice job of OCR these days. John - My impression of the Unisaw vs. Felder saw noise is the exact opposite. The Unisaws and JET Xacta saws I've used have all run surprisingly quiet. My Felder saw is a screamer in comparison. Both the new Forrest WWII and the stock Felder 12" blades sound about the same. I would describe it as a fairly loud woosh noise... Charlie - The sound meter is a digital read-out Radio Shack model 33-2055 claiming accuracy to +/- 2dB at 114 dB SPL. It has two settings for weighting: A and C. From the manual: A-curve responds mainly to frequencies in the 500-10,000 Hz range, and the C-curve responds to 32 - 10,000 range. My measurements were given in the A-curve. The C-curve consistently read just 1dB lower than the A-curve for the saw. Mark - Both of my 12" blades (a new Forrest and a moderately used Felder) make about the same noise. I positioned the sound meter pickup at the "ear height" at typical operator position (in the case of the tablesaw, standing to the left of the sliding table). Having no blade mounted registers at 63dB. Totally enclosing the blade guard sides (with scrap wood) reduced the noise from 98dB to 90dB. Joe - They are 12" blades. I don't have a 10" blade to try. Rod - Maybe I just have two noisy saw blades. Feel free to visit this weekend if Everett isn't too far of a drive for you and you have the time. See my other message for phone #'s. OK everyone - If you've read this far, I went to the trouble of making a really cool (haha) recording through the sound level meter (it has a microphone output jack). I set the recording input level based on the table saw, so you should get a good sense of dynamics. I edited the recordings into one 716KB WAV file that takes just a couple minutes to download. The sequence of the recording is Shaper, Jointer, Planer, Tablesaw, Dust Collector (I added the DC just to irritate you, Mr. Renzetti! hehehahah). You can find it in the vault in my folder in the Members directory (or try the following link to the file on my own web site): Even though it is a "telephone quality" recording, I feel it is still a good representation for what the setup actually sounds like. ...Geoff |

Re: Shaper cutters
Thanks for the tip on the Freud groovers, Art. I have been perusing a
Freud catalog and have had my eye on those groovers, especially the 1/4 & 3/8" x 6" OD or the 8" OD. I have checked "Abbey Tool" prices, which seemed pretty good, but I'll also check "The Leading Edge". I thought a groover cutter would be nice to have when making slip or "bridle" joints. I not sure whether the 8" OD is necessary though. Take care, John Taylor "art pentz" <ahpn-@...> wrote: original article: =240 With respect to the current poll on cutter brands I thought I wouldhave found are from "The Leading Edge" (tm ). Re: Blade Noise
Geoff,
I believe you said you live north of Seattle but I'm not sure. Tried to look your location up under the member info but must not be doing it correctly. Anyway, I have to be in Bellevue this coming Sat. afternoon. Thought that if you are somewhere around the Lynnwood area I could look you up Sat. morning and bring some blades along to test on your machine if you would like. Re: the comment from John R. about getting your just dessert with the noise issue. We just need to wait for a few more months to see what kind of excuses he is going to have about the blood shot eyes and lack of sleep. I'll bet that even your saw would sound quiet to him then. Congratulations J.R.!!! May the good Lord provide you and your wife with a very happy and healthy baby. Rod B. |

John,
Are you running a 10" or 12" blade on your machine? I would imagine that the dB levels specified by Felder for noise levels are measured with the 10" (250 mm?)blades. Wow, 98dB is loud -- maybe loud enough to get a visit from OSHA or the FAA. I think a jet at full-throttle is just a bit over 100 dB! Does the value change depending upon the position of the pickup? With a change in blades? Without a blade? When insulating, you may have to use a heavy material (like lead sheeting) in addition to typical fiberglass batting. Both dampen vibrations, but at different frequencies. Another technique used in sound-proofing buildings is to use 2 layers of drywall separated by strips of metal. If the numbers are correct, I think you've got a heck of a noise problem that's going to limit your hours of work. Good luck, Mark Shepherd wrote: Thick caffeinated air aside (hmm), I appreciate all your interesting and |

the saw on my machine is 18 dB louder than the planer. If the sound meter computes dBA, perhaps the higher pitch of the air whoosh noise registers a higher sound value for the same noise power out. Did you average several readings? I wonder if the saw measurement was made at a particularly loud location. -----Original Message-----

John!? Hate to ruin a good tale, but I did pull every accessory off
the BF-5 before lifting it off the truck solo, so it probably wasn't any
more than a ton - hardly worth mentioning!? Besides, this was last
