Re: Does anyone know the name of the round feature in this Chinese room partition?

Imran,

I am sure you can find pretty much everything in Shanghai, just need to know where to go. A weekend is not enough to explore Shanghai with 24 million population :)

苏绣 is from Suzhou, a city 106 KM from Shanghai. High quality 苏绣 is very expensive. Here on douyin (tiktok in China), you can find lots of wooden partition with 苏绣.

Ok, the round piece is probably?刺绣 : patterns of pictures that consist of stitches sewn?directly onto cloth.?

Re: Drawer slide recommendations

Another vote for Salice (the F70 renamed to Progressa pro)

Re: Drawer slide recommendations

I guess it's all proportional to their given load rating. The heavier duty side mounted slides will not rack as much as the lighter duty ones, but with drawers over 36 inches in width, and without any synchronization, they will tend to rack as they are pulled out. One thing that will help will be having just one pull mounted centrally on the drawer front. I think with anything, if you are talking cheaper slides, regardless of whether they're side mounted or undermount, you're bound to have issues at some point. I have had side mounted accuride slides on shop drawers and for all the wide drawers that are used daily, they have all crapped out and had to be replaced. Unfortunately i haven't yet had the time to make new drawers and use heavy duty undermounts, like the F70 i talk about, but i have had those in use for at least 6 years on some jobs where they were used to their capacity on 30" deep x 36" wide pullouts and they are still working perfectly with no deflection at all. Either way you go, i would suggest buying good quality if you can.

Bryce

Re: Drawer slide recommendations

Bryce, I did not know side mounts were more susceptible to racking than bottom mounts.
?
My beef with bottom mounts is deflection (sagging). My current kitchen drawers sag well before they are loaded to rated capacity. I’ve assumed that is due to the shallow depth of the structural elements. As the moment of inertia of a structural member is proportional to the cube of it’s depth the side mounts can easily be made much stiffer.
?
That said, input from people who make their living with this sort of thing is valuable.

Re: Drawer slide recommendations

Hi John,?
I just saw your last message. Sounds like the Salice F70 slides will work for weight since they are rated higher than the ones you're looking at using. Do yourself a huge favour and get the Salice F70 slides, not the KV 8500. I promise you, you will not regret it.?

Re: Drawer slide recommendations

I would forget the side mounted slides altogether with drawers that wide. My recommendation would be a Salice F70. They are fully syncronized, go up to 750mm in depth with a load rating of 78kg.?
The wider your drawers, the more problematic the side mount options become due to racking. The F70's are very well priced too. If you can get away with that load rating, that would be the way to go. If you need something that will support a lot more weight, you may be stuck with side mounted BB slides.

Re: Inset drawer lighting

When I was young, I would go out to restaurants with my father, and he would hold up the little lights commonly found on restaurant tables so as to better illuminate the menu.? I never fully understand why he did that.? Now that I'm an old fart, I totally get it.? It seems like standard lighting in residential settings is often dimmer than I'd like.? I've never seen drawers with built-in illumination, but I can see the appeal.? In my kitchen, I use the lighting under the upper cabinets almost every day, and wish it was a bit brighter than it is.? Of course, if the room has lighting bright enough to make me happy, then probably the drawer doesn't need it.
?
These days, I try to do all I can to protect my eyes, and not lose any more sensitivity.? Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but Fronius welders now have a feature with a wireless link to a welding helmet, and it can trigger the shield to dim a split second *before* the arc strikes.? I only barely managed to talk myself out of getting one of their rigs for Christmas.? :-)

In-cabinet lighting can really elevate a piece. Some clients really like it. I have installed it in the past and it makes a big difference especially in display pieces. Here's a link to Hafele lighting. I love their products and support.

Re: Cf741s-fine cut blade leaving ripples in Pear.

My Hammer C3-31 was a floor model and it had a vibration which grossly affected the cut quality, especially with veneer plywoods. A friend/fellow woodworker suggested a blade dampener, so I ordered one from Forrest and it improved the vibration considerably. ?It’s just a smaller diameter blade with no cutting gullets or carbide that’s balanced and is a larger diameter than the provided securing nut and washer. ?This is worth a try as it worked for me.

Re: Cf741s-fine cut blade leaving ripples in Pear.

I assume these blades used to cut fine and you have them both sharpened, so my first thought would be to try another blade and see what happens.

Moving on, you are xcutting material clamped to the slider and getting ripples on the endgrain. A picture would be very helpful, so I am assuming that you are not getting blade arc impressions which you could get with improper toe out. This is easy to tell as the arc of leading edge of the blade is opposite to the trailing edge, concave vs convex.

Are you making a trim cut where only the left side of blade is in the wood? If so try to cut where you have couple of inches of cutoff and examine both pieces.

You should check the splitter is adjusted properly. You could also remove it and make a test cut with clamped material. This will eliminate the splitter as a contributor.

I am no expert but I try to remove as many contributors as possible. For grins, I would also change material type or at least try another piece of wood.

I use KV 8908 as well. ?My supplier is??- they have a branch near you in Boise and worth setting up an account if you don’t already have one. ?They have good pricing and will ship to the local branch for pick up free of charge if they’re not already in stock. ?
