Re: Alpine advance joinery workclass

David and David,
?
Out of curiosity, what cutters you haven't used?

Re: Alpine advance joinery workclass

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Only three DB? ? I probably have 5 cutters I¡¯ve never used, not even once. PK and David B speak wisdom. I listened some but should have listened more.?

PK,
?
I already have the FAT300s and I don¡¯t have a lot of space for additional cart.?
I heard the saying not to buy tools before I have the shaper. I wanted some basic tooling like adjustable groover/Cabinet [shaker] set and radius cutter.?

But I¡¯ll probably get just one as a start (I¡¯ll also compare them to Whitehill)

I agree with Paul on this one. Buy shaper cutters as you have a project that needs a specific cutter. ? Resist the temptation to proactively stock up on cutters when they are on sale. ? I have at least three cutters that are 20 years old and have never been used, but were such a ¡°great deal¡± in the Felder Christmas sale catalog. ?

I don't want to crush Rangate's sales but there are many on the FOG that would say to slow roll the tooling purchases until you know what you plan to build and how to use the shaper.
?
I would say that I love their carts and they have a good sale going on that.

I got the promotion paper from Rangate for end of year sale. It is really tempting to buy some cutters. Trying to resist the temptation before I¡¯ll have the shaper on hand (should arrive to Sacramento warehouse this Tuesday)

Netanel,
?
This is a great question.? I have been twice, I need to go back probably a few more times.? I may go back later next year?
?
Bring your credit card.? You will find a lot in Joe's shop that you will dream about and some tooling you will want from Rangate. (and maybe a cart and a Pizzi system...)
?
I knew of Kundig, but never used one.? I knew of Martin, but had only seen them.? The setups the cabinets etc. it will open your eyes to new ways of working.

Tech hours are horrendous! ?I had a tech in my shop until 12:30am in the morning one time. ?He arrived at 5:30 that day. ?Crazy! ?But hey, he fixed that issue. ?

have a few pieces of MDF available in the 3 foot square region for use in fence alignment test cuts.

Re: Christmas in November

Rod, I have been using a big square and a dial indicator for checking the fence. I have MDF available, but hope I can use the square instead as that is quite a bit faster.
?
Someone in the Felder warehouse taped the Bill of Lading for my slider on the wrong box. Not sure why. What is curious is that the BOL is incorrect, listing the dimensions of the slider box as being about a foot shorter than my actual slider. The crate actually delivered is about a foot longer than my actual slider. The replacement will be here next Tuesday. To Felder's credit they found the error before I did and are stepping up to fix it as best they can.
?
It is a fancy saw for a hobby shop. I got the digital angle display, although I do not recall actually cutting an angle with the fence on my K700S in the three years I've had it. I need precision angles for gluing up segments for segmented bowls, but a simple wedgie sled is faster and more accurate than a miter gauge is.

Alpine advance joinery workclass

I just registered to the Alpine workshop for next year (March 2025). I wonder if some here is also going?
?
For people who attend the workshop, is there anything I should know/learn/practice before the workshop that could make the workshop more efficient??

Re: Christmas in November

Imran has got jokes!
?
I think the sticker system is hilarious.? The kappa 400 was 6 years old when I got it and still has a bunch of stickers on it and the K500 I just got used, that was 18 years old still had like 20 stickers on it.
?
You would think there would be some other way to validate as those stickers are production based in Austria vs the warehouse in Delaware, Texas or Sacramento.
?
I have been to Sacramento, no scan tools there.? Just a guy making crates and working a forklift.? Not slighting the guy, just your basic warehouse.

Re: Christmas in November

Exciting John, when I got my Kappa 400 commissioned I verified voltage readings to my outlet. I did install the blade guard and control panel but not the slider. Kelly was the tech and he was excellent ?

Hi John,

Congratulations on the saw and its safe arrival. I have no idea how Felder can¡¯t ship the right stuff. Maybe they need to go to 2 stickers per part as the single sticker system ain¡¯t working so well.

Just got a new saw today! Ordered in March, so it has been a long wait.

Unfortunately Felder shipped someone else¡¯s slider with it. The first thing the rigger brought in was that incorrect slider, and as soon as he had it in the shop Felder called to ask for the serial number and tell me it was the wrong one. Ah, well. Felder is taking care of it.
?
I am a bit confused about assembly and commissioning. Perhaps someone here can give me some advice.
?
How much assembly am I supposed to do before the tech arrives? I am supposed to send a photo showing power connected and dust collection connected, which requires some assembly. I cannot verify that the power is connected correctly until the slider and the control display is hooked up. However, the user manual says only authorized Felder techs can do assembly and the manual does not provide much assembly information.
?
The tech is supposed to arrive between 3 and 4 PM the day of the commissioning, which does not leave much time for assembly. That suggests I ought to have the basic assembly done.
?
What has other people¡¯s experience been?

Re: New options to upgrade a Felder Straight cutter head

Yes possibly Brian,
I would still do it again if i was in the same position, maybe just with this new head that's available! :) The benefits are great. Of course if you can afford a new machine, that not only gets you the new head, but any other impovements the new machine might have over the old one.
Actually if there's one negative i have on the Silent power head in my new machine, it's that it's almost too quiet and i really have to look to check that i've turned it off sometimes!?

Re: Christmas in November

Thanks fellows. I appreciate the information.
?
I may try to get the slider installed and the saw leveled before the tech arrives, and I¡¯ll have the 4¡± hose ready to hook up to the overhead guard. I¡¯ll leave the guard off for now. It is very heavy and awkward.
?
PK, the saw has 3200 mm slider, 48¡± rip capacity, digital stop on the 1900-mm outrigger fence, and digital angle readout, and switch on sliding table. 7.5 HP motor. Has the PCS system. Standard features include dado capability, automatic scoring, automatic rip fence, and probably more that I do not recall right off hand. It will probably take a long time to learn how to use all of the features.

Re: Christmas in November

I commission my K700s back in April, I partially started the assembly to be more familiar with the saw, It ?still took us 6-7 hours to complete the commission . I don¡¯t see a scenario where you start at 4PM and finish commission the saw at a reasonable time

Re: Christmas in November

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

You won¡¯t be able to fully connect the machine to a dust collector without installing the overhead saw guard system, which is big and heavy. ?This is not a single person job unless you have some type of overhead lifting device and even then it¡¯s a dangerous operation for a single person. ?Same goes for the heads up display mast.?

When my Kappa was delivered, I waited to install both those items until the tech was here for commissioning. ?The two of us managed to get them installed, but there was a lot of fussing around trying to get bolt holes to align, etc. ? It was a struggle with just the two of us. ?Similarly the extension tables on two sides are also heavy and a real PITA to install and required at least two hours of the tech time to get them on the machine and properly aligned to the cast-iron top. ?Commissioning a Kappa 450 is at least an eight hour day project for the tech. ?

I recommend you call Felder service and ask them to clarify. Asking the user to do all this assembly prior to commissioning is an unreasonable expectation in my opinion. ?

You should only need to verify the voltage at the supply to the machine with a voltmeter and tell Felder those numbers over the phone prior to scheduling commissioning. ?

what Felder expects you to do is to remove it from the pallet, connect it to dust collector and measure the voltage in the outlet near the saw.

You don¡¯t need to send any pictures, just provide the voltage measurement (L1-L2,L1-L3,L2-L3,L1-G, L2-G and L3-G)
