?Hi Lucky,??When I briefly had a A 951 L, I configured it with the Felder feeder bracket and a DS-400 power feeder. The A 951 L was a great jointer, and I'd recommend it without hesitation to someone looking for a large jointer (also look at the F 520). I bought it thinking I could accommodate separates, but once I had the machine in my Shop I immediately recognized I just didn't have the space for separates, sold it and replaced with an FS-52es. The A 951 L went to a local business who has it in heavy daily use and they just rave about it every time I stop by.?I've been very pleased with my FS-52es, it's a relatively simple, no-frills machine but that's what I wanted, something very stout with few/no bells/whistles to give me trouble. I recently received a TF-130, ordered it for the same reason, I wanted a dead-simple, an all-mechanical/analog shaper with a side-mount tenoning table and a pull-out bar. The TF-130 with the "TL Pro-10" fits the bill, and I've been very pleased with it thus far. With a 40mm spindle, it's rated for 350mm tooling when tenoning. ??Anyways, yes, I did think that the feeder was helpful, particularly on large/heavy/dense timbers. Fortunately, most of my work is focused on doors and windows, so I'm generally processing more narrow stock, and if it's a relatively wide piece it's for a bottom rail or a panel, so at least it's short. That being said, I am currently processing some large Cedar beams for project where I'm definitely missing having a power feeder, and would consider figuring out a way to retrofit one to the FS-52es if I foresaw a lot more of that kind of work coming in.??On my A 951 L, I generally still preferred to keep the Euro guard in place over the cutter block when using the power feed, at least on the portion of cutter block that might be exposed.??Depending on the geometry of the swing of your power feeder, it?shouldn't interfere with the Suvamatic guard. The big catch here is that I don't think there's a straightforward way to remove the gold part of the guard mechanism, since it's spring loaded into the rest of the guard system, whereas the standard Felder Euro guard system can be easily removed by removing the gland end from the aluminum profile and slipping it out the side.??JP Rice,??For you AD941, ?ask Felder if you can get a parts diagram for a AD941 configured with the Suvamatic guard. From there, you can figure out if Felder is using a standard Suvamatic guard with stock mounting, or if they have a custom bracket.??When I ordered my Suvamatic from Scott & Sargeant, they inquired on which machine I would be mounting it, and sold me a Suvamatic guard with specialty mounting hardware designed specifically for the SCM jointer/planer combos. This hardware mounted the Suvamatic guard to the metal fascia between the two jointer tables. The advantage of this mounting location was that the Suvamatic guard flipped up with the tables. The downside of this location is, due to the extra weight of the Suvamatic and the surprisingly well-tuned spring assist on the FS-52es, the added weight made lifting the tables significantly more difficult.??When I ordered my FS-52es, I included the SCM mounting bracket for the Suvamatic as one of the accessories. This mounting bracket took several months to arrive and SCM didn't even have a drawing to share until a few weeks before I received it so I didn't really understand what I was getting until it arrived. The SCM bracket mounts the Suvamatic guard to the machine chassis. The down side here is you need to fully retract the guard before lifting the tables, then slide the guard back over the planer hood, so it adds an extra step or two (a few seconds). The benefit of this mounting location is that the jointer tables are back to a "finger tip" lift, I'm still surprised as how finely tuned the springs are.??Anyways, for your AD941, it may be worth carefully reviewing the installation method, and if there will be any unexpected consequences. Scott & Sargeant supplied me with a technical drawing of the Suvamatic prior to purchase, they can probably do the same for you.??Best,?--Tom Gensmer

Tom, and others:
?
I’m curious whether any of you use a feeder on your machines? I have a Dual-51 and used the Euro comfort guard for years, which as least is segmented so it gets somewhat out of the way. However, I use the feeder for say 90% of all face-planing operations, and even that guard gets in the way. So I removed it altogether. Shock horror!
?
I have the impression that the Suvamatic guard is indeed the best option, but would it get in the way of swinging a feeder into and out of place? I’ve just taken to being careful when operating the surface planer with the feeder (and occasionally without). But I’d be keen to hear from other users of a feeder.
?
PS: Some of my colleagues here in Australia think a feeder is a silly idea for surface-planing operations. However, I “believe” this opinion is borne from a lack of experience. It is next to impossible to flatten a 500mm+ wide slab of 50mm thick Redgum when said slab is short. It can be done but the effort is more than significant. The material is generally too hard to push through safely, even with sharp blades and good lubrication. But a slab at 3+m (i.e. 10 feet) at 500mm+ wide and 50mm thick is actually and genuinely impossible to face plane without the assistance of feeder. Such a slab can weigh 75kg or 165 pounds. For my work, a feeder is essential.

Lucky

Hi Mac,?

I installed the Suvamatic guard on my FS-52es. I'd have to look at what I paid for it, but I purchased it from Scott & Sargeant in the UK. They do ask which machine you're using as apparently there are a number of different Suvamatic configurations.?
?
I love the Suvamatic, not sure I could go back to a standard Euro guard, and the pork chop guard that shipped with the machine was a joke.?

I canceled the order of the 52ES today.?and got the l'invincibile FS 7 instead.I was at the SCM booth at IWF and they have FS on display. It looks really nice machine and I really liked the ready 3 system.SCM offers 10% off the machine this week, makes the upgrade possible (MSRP is ~29k, so that is something like ~6K above the 52ES)?I didn’t like the pork chop blade guard that came with the 52ES. I intended to get the scm euro/savumatic guard, which lowered the delta even more.?The FS7 comes with the euro guard.?
It looks like they start importing the FS on a regular basis and it is not a special order.?
Delivery is expected around November/December??
