Re: Installing Byrd Shelix cutterhead in Exact51 planer

Hi Joe, thanks for that. Mine is a 2008. I have everything apart now and am waiting for parts to arrive today so I can reassemble.

It appears that the m3 screw that holds the shaft key for the pulley sheared off and eventually caused slop between the pulley and shaft. The shaft wore away more than the pulley.

I did take reference readings between the roller adjustment screws and the blocks, as you suggested. What I haven’t figured out yet is how the blocks are registered in the planer frame. It seems the bolt holes for this connection are well oversized and the blocks have quite a bit of room for adjustment. I might be missing something, do you remember how you set the placement of the blocks in the planer body? Is this adjustability how the cutterhead is brought parallel to the table?

Hi Chris,

What year is your Exact 51?

Mine was a 2005.

When I had the rubber infeed and outfeed rollers recovered I followed the directions to mark the height of the screws that set the height of the feed orders by using a depth gage to measure from the top of the depth screw to the edge of the pillow block that held everything together.

I attached a page from the Exact 51 manual. This page is from the manual for the Exact 51 even though it shows a drawing of the planer/jointer combo machine.

Re: N4400 Band Saw

I have owned and used a N4400 for about 12 years, but never used a PM, and so cannot make a comparison there. It is light years from a Taiwanese 14” I had previously. I also have a K3 and A3-31, and the build quality is the same - very solid and reliable, from the description of others not to that of full Felder, but easily better than most. My K3 is better than a SawStop. So, well built and perfect for a weekend warrior such as myself.

I can tension up a 1” Lenox Woodmaster CT carbide blade. That is notable. The dust control was not great but I added a simple modification, and it is now truly excellent below the table. New versions may be better to begin with.?

The fence is decent, and I have made a small mod which, again, has lifted its usefulness.?

The resaw add-on I designed is due to be published in FWW magazine at some stage.?

As you can see, I’ve spent some time with this bandsaw, and I do not plan to get another.

Regards from Perth

Derek

Re: N4400 Band Saw

I bought an SCMI 540. Seems to have very good dust collection, a large table, and 20” resaw capacity. Does not have fancy guides. I’ve not had time to use it much at all.

Re: N4400 Band Saw

I was fortunate to find a FB610 used.? Great machine.? I added a med duty Cantek power feeder and have been having great success resawing 15+” walnut to 3/16”. I like the Lenox tri-master blades 2/3 tpi, 1” blades (not cheap but they go forever.? Bandsawbladesdirect.com will discount if you buy a couple).

I made my own fence for resaw work and while I could use the Felder extension tables from other machines, I like the Bora roller tables (I use one for each side). ?

I upgraded from a Laguna 16HD that I’d had since the 90s.? I used to think the world of it until I had the chance to go bigger.? Which btw, is my advice (for resaw).? Bigger is better imo.

I'm not a Grizzly guy but for resawing I'd look at the 636X .? I've heard good things about that particular saw but have no real experience.? A used Centauro 20" or ACM, Aggizani, or Centauro 24" ( not the 24" height ones ) would be my? choices in that size range for resawing if you find one.? Dave

?
I think you already know the answer to the build quality question.? The griz 513 is underpowered for resawing and the 636 is really close in price to the hammer.? The PM1500 will have a lot more creature comforts and do-dads than the 4400, but more importantly - better dust collection.

Powermatic 1500 for me, love mine! ?
Carter blades, the greenwood line. ?

If your bandsaw I’d properly set up, you only need a 5/8 & 3/8 to take care of 90% of your needs. ?
