Re: Kitchen Cabinet Standards
John, in your comparison of wood to melamine, do you mean melamine per se, or laminate more generally?
"Melamine" often refers to the very thin layer applied to particle board, and has a bad reputation in part because of the particle board, and in part because of the limited durability of very thin Melamine.? The combination is widely seen as "low quality" to be sure. Laminates more generally are a different class, although many people conflate laminates with melamine, and/or conflate laminates with "cheap formica". Good laminate on good ply drawers are much more durable and much more expensive than typical solid wood drawers however.? ?? |
Re: Fusion 360
As I noted earlier in this thread:
> Fusion360 subscription is about 1/3 of a latte per day (M-F, 50 weeks/year).? Seems like a great deal to me.?? Dave Davies, your observation of a software that is $8k/year subscription, or $20k purchase plus $3k annual support works out to a?~3 year equivalency, which is pretty much the standard in the industry in my experience (I have ~100 licenses costing $3M annually)? Obviously this is really, really great for the software companies, since the vast majority of business customers keep software for 5-15 years.? And it's attractive to most customers in the short term, since the average business line manager making such purchase decisions doesn't have a financial horizon of more than a few years.?? And all the enhanced revenue goes to improving the product, so it all makes sense (just kidding, it actually goes to exec perks and shareholders ;-) |
Re: Fusion 360
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI concur with Sang Luu about some of these large software companies and their business practices. ?I don¡¯t especially like or trust Autodesk, nor Adobe - especially their business practices. ?Latest announced price increase on Fusion 360 being an example. ?Like I said before, I may switch back to the free version of Fusion when my license expires in 2024. ?If by then they have instituted more policy and pricing changes that make it difficult to stay on F360, I will likely find an alternative. ?The biggest issue with all these applications is that once you¡¯re trained on them and have a deep inventory of files built with them, it¡¯s difficult to move away - this is by design of course. But to put this in a slightly different light, I try to resist the emotional influence and step back up to 10,000 feet and ask myself ¡°are you getting value for what you¡¯re spending?¡±. ?Even at $500/year for Fusion 360, I ask myself questions like this: That¡¯s $42 per month. ?This is $10 per month less than what I pay for my cell phone plan (which today is less of a phone than a mobile web portal). ? I spend $80 per month for gigabit internet. ?My electric bill is $120. ?My trash collection service is the same as using Fusion. ?Two nice lunches out is more than what it costs to use Fusion for a month. ?I spend more at Starbucks every month. ?Given how much I use the product, how much enjoyment I get from using it, the gratification I feel having learned it, the $42 represents solid value - TO ME. ?Maybe not to everyone, but it does to me. Similarly, I do a lot of photography and paying Adobe $10/month for Photoshop is a no brainer from a value standpoint. I spend considerably more than the cost of Fusion every month on video and music services like Netflix, AppleTV, HBO, Spotify, 2-day movie streaming rentals, etc. ?Yet I spend far more ¡°screen-time hours¡± in front of Fusion than all the others combined. I bristle just like everyone else with all these outfits having a direct pipe into my wallet. ?But I find it helps to reflect on value received - especially when some of this stuff used ?to be free, or ¡°has no manufacturing cost¡± in our minds. Re: Help with table adjustments on A3-41

I finally figured out my machine. The four bolts you loosen directly under the hinge have four corresponding nuts on the back of the machine. I loosened both the front and back on the infeed table of my machine. This causes the whole hinge to rock back and forth making the adjustment screws worthless. You might try lightly loosening the back nuts and it will give you more play in the hinge movement. A word of warning though, it could also cause your entire table to shift. My main problem was I had forgotten about the back nuts because you can still tighten the front bolts. After walking away from it for a day I finally figured out the problem and now have it dialed in. Maybe this can help you out.?

Re: Fusion 360
This model is most definitely the norm. I've purchased many hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of software for all sorts of engineering design and still get to pay that magical yearly subscription fee to make sure we stay up to date with all the latest security patches. If my projects can't afford the upkeep my organization requires we stop using the "perpetual" software as they consider it a security vulnerability. Re: Thoughts on Adding VFD to Multi Motor Machine
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks Jonathan. I know you were thinking along the same lines, as far as the high level mechanization is concerned. Wow, my VFD max ambient spec is 104F so these guys are really pushing it. There is a lot to consider when wiring VFD as it is a high frequency noise generator. That is the penalty for the electrical efficiency VFDs achieve when compared to the pure analog voltage output of PhasePerfect. So while there are many precautions in routing the power to the VFD some of them may be more of a CYA or more applicable to larger units than what most of us will have in the shop. Also, it is a receiver issue, not a VFD concern. So if you don¡¯t have sensitive electronics noise generated by the VFD is less of a concern. As an example, all of my AC cables run on ?2.5¡± wide ledge on top of the block foundation. This ?is covered by an inverted L shape baseboard. Since I do my own wiring, I ran my VFD power cable in the same ¡°conduit¡± to see if it would cause any issues. None have come up over 6+ yrs, so I have left it as is. I am inputting single phase so the input current is higher than it would be with 3 phase input. It is 7.5HP VFD running a 5.3HP RL125. I do NOT suggest this if you hire an electrician. In that case follow the VFD wiring guidelines. However, if you are doing your own work, then you can try, as I did. If it works still be aware that if you add a sensitive equipment later you may have to redo your work. It just depends upon the situation. CF731 For sale Cambridge UK
All I have been a member for many years but due to the fact that my account is in the UK I cannot post in US.
? - I have a CF731 PRO and a KF700 - Please note this is in the UK (I normally reside in PA). I will post details of the KF700 later. The CF731 has 4kW motors and is 2003. I have split the machine and was in process of changing over to VFD when I moved to the US "temporarily". I have since bought a Hammer combination in the US and have decided to not move these to the USA. I have lots of accessories that go with the machines not shown (router spindle, spindles, ..). Considering offers - If required I will also complete VFD install Niel |

We just paid $8k for a one year subscription to a discrete event simulation for my day job.? A perpetual license is still available for $20k and the perpetual requires annual maintenance agreements costing $3k if you want to stay current.? As they say, you have to pay to play. Re: Hello From New Member
Hi Tom, Sang and David, thanks for your kind welcome. I¡¯m at the start of a long walk in the French Alps so I won¡¯t get much done on the workshop until September.? I¡¯m a mechanical engineer by profession. I¡¯ve always loved working with wood and sometimes wish I¡¯d retrained. About 25 years ago we lived in an old house with a cellar garage that I could use as a workshop. I bought Felder KF700, AD531 and an AF22. Re: Fusion 360
Not to add fuel to the fire, but... I'm a long time (and pretty proficient) user of F360. In general I'm pretty happy.?Not happy with how all of the significant new features end up in added-cost add-ons. I use it for all of my woodworking, but initially for my CNC router. I am very much a believer in David's "no free lunch" position (my paraphrase), and signed up for a fixed-price for lifetime basic license years ago - b4 they trashed the free license functionality even. This morning AD sent out an email that the basic license price is increasing to $545/yr in August. Remains to be seen if they will continue to honor my fixed license price.
For me, Autodesk has always been a very difficult company to trust. P.S. Fair is fair - AD has just sent notice they will continue to honor their "Legacy" customer pricing as long as the license remains paid.-rb |
Re: Kitchen Cabinet Standards
I am glad to see someone sticking up for side mount drawer slides. The first drawers I made were for my workbench some 35 years ago. Finger-jointed poplar boxes with full-extension Accuride side mounts. Those are still working quite well. Some of the rubber bumpers are decomposing, but the rollers still run smoothly.
Seven years ago the contractor for my house used Grass full-extension under mount slides, with soft-close and self-close. They were not cheap at all. Unfortunately they sag under any reasonable load of bowls, pots and pans, etc. Instead of self-close?they creep open once they are partly open. They just do not feel solid, and are very disappointing. Maybe Blum is significantly better in that regard. If the Tandem will fit maybe I will replace a pair and see how well they work. A few years ago I built 29 drawers for a hobby space. These will see some significant loads (tools and bits of lead and brass), so I went back to the same Accuride side mounts. They are doing quite well, no matter what I put in them. No sag, no wobble, no drag. Yes I can see the slides but that is not a big deal since they work. Boxes are glued and nailed Baltic Birch, as it was before prices went out of sight. This may be heresy, but I like melamine kitchen drawers. I cook and clean quite a bit, and the white melamine is bright and so it is easy to find things, it is easy to clean, and is pretty water resistant. Doors and drawer fronts in my house are clear finished maple, but if I had a choice of maple boxes or melamine I would choose melamine. That is just for the kitchen and bathrooms. For furniture and dry spaces solid wood is beautiful and works well. This is just my opinion, based on the way I use my house. Quality has to include a component of fitness for purpose. -- John Hinman Boise ID K700S and A941 |
