Re: Baltic Birch ply

Thats nuts. Prefinished or standard?

Re: Baltic Birch ply

I don't think it exists except for special order. Columbia Europly is the same - the maple veneer is a hair above cardstock thickness.?

Just checked Menards and it’s $169.95 for a 4x8 sheet of 3/4”. ?Pretty sure that’s the Russian Birch they sell

I paid 135.00 for B/BB grade 12mm last week. I was told that there was only 30 sheets of this size and grade on the West Coast.?

Apple Ply is good but the face is very thin like normal ply. I know of nothing with face thickness of BB, if someone does please share.

Re: Baltic Birch ply

Columbia Europly is an alternative, but if I'm not mistaken the veneer cores there are Eastern European import too. Boy, I'm glad I loaded up. 3/4" maple prefinished was something like $125/sheet at the time. I better check with my supplier next week!

Re: Baltic Birch ply

The current issue of Fine Woodworking has an article on different kinds of sheet goods. Some of the stuff looks exotic.

Just picked up one sheet of BB, $184! ?I love Apply ply, but it was $228/sheet! ?Ouch! ?

Has anyone received a new Format 4 machine with the new touchpad?

I was browsing through the Felder site yesterday (placating me while I wait for the profli 45z x-motion) and I noticed that the touchscreen is updated.

Has anyone received one of these bad boys?

Re: Updated DRO Parallel Guides and new Digi-Fritz & Franz #newprojects #digital #diy

Hey, me too, I’m interested. Nice work.

Re: Wood Porn. I know you all appreciate it as much (more?) than the machines you have/use.

I have had a couple of Walnut boards in my shop for awhile that were part of Sam Maloof's stash. Saved them for the right project. They were rough sawn and I did not quite appreciate the figure - Picture 1. ?As I was about to complete an upper cabinet for my kitchen in Walnut, I was thinking if I should ?use just a little bit of that wood for the 3/8 thick flat panels in 2 small doors or other figured walnut I had from the local lumber store. ?Picture 2 shows the other piece on the left and the Maloof wood on the right.

Then, I sanded the Maloof wood and sprayed some water on it - Picture 3.

Wow!

Re: Updated DRO Parallel Guides and new Digi-Fritz & Franz #newprojects #digital #diy

Edited

As much as I like my shop made FF (pictures posted and a recent prior thread)I would love a DRO Fritz Franz such as the very nice example shown or the Accurate Technologies product etc.. ?However, I would not want to upgrade if that meant not having the wood between F and F in contact with a fence that gripped the wood . ?For pieces not that wide, no room for the Mac clamps, and what keeps the long narrow pieces stable during the cut is the Franz pushing towards Fritz as the gripping surface prevents lateral motion from friction (in my case a Festool non-skid strip on the edges of the jig). ?With extruded aluminum only, I would not feel things were so stable.

Re: Efficient Method to Wrap Plywood with Solid Wood

Too bad Lamello discontinued the Cantex lipping planer. ?I remember seeing one used in great condition on eBay not all that long ago. ?If I remember correctly, it got a lot of bids and sold for over 2k. ?I searched today just out of curiosity. ?Not seeing one for sale on the used market at this time. ??

Most movers will be? dis-interested in machinery preferring to leave that to a rigging firm.? I would submit that a mover is probably? the wrong? kind of service.? Maybe better to rent something? with which to move your equipment at each end of the journey? or just call a rigger.

Having just completed moving a slightly more extensive list of equipment I would vote for sell and buy new. I only moved about an hour away into a new shop and had the equipment on hand to complete the move in the midst of our winter. It was still stressful and difficult but everything survived just fine. I was unable to locate a mover interested in the project. With the distance you are going, selling ahead makes sense, I believe. Best to you on your new place in New Hampshire!

Thanks for all the inputs. Dan, turned me on to using spline for this project. I liked that it also reinforced the miter a bit.

Wood edging was planed 0.005” thicker and the spline location was adjusted so edging is centered on ply.?Sanding was minimal with RO.?I would likely go 0.010” in future as I had to still ensure that wood is proud of top during clamping in one area. Turned out great.

Can you borrow a lipping planer?? Perfect for such jobs.? To attach, sounds like an application similar to how I like installing face frames, I use biscuit jointer referenced from adjustable plate to plough groove and them random biscuits on the applied edge to freely adjust left/right (it leaves a consistent reveal).? Make sense??

I need to make a replacement table top for a friend. He wants ply because he is going to paint it. Finished size is 20”x53”. So plan to use 3/4” ply to which I will apply 1” wide solid wood edging. Edging will be profiled. Mitered corners for edging. I can round the sharp corners.

I was excited to finally use the MFK to trim edging flush with the top but it can only do 5/8” (3/4” tops) wide edging. That means I have to clamp a wide board to the edge (for stabilizing a router) and use a flush trim bit.

I am thinking of a slot and tenon interface, done on the shaper, to apply the edging. I can offset the cutter by a few thousands to ensure edging will be proud of the top and then just sand it. Does this sound like a good plan?

I would like to profile before gluing the edging to avoid blow out (during profiling) and the slot/tenon arrangement sound attractive for that reason as well. Maybe just able to use painters tape to glue the edging.

Thanks for the input, all. I think I'm going to sell the vast majority once I finish my current project.
