Re: Self Retracting Air & electric Reels?

Edited

I have this dual arm air hose reel from Tekton. Well built, very good quality rubber hose and so far works very well.

Rants are OK. It helps those of us who have had issues feel like we're not alone.

I took delivery of a new Felder FB 610 bandsaw back in October and encountered the following issues which were introduced during the re-packaging process out of Delaware (confirmed by a Felder tech):

1.) Various gouges and dents on the front upper and middle quadrants of the machine base frame.

2.) Broken adjustment cam on the upper blade guide (for whatever reason they actually tossed the broken cam into another parts bag enclosed with this machine).?

3.) Bent blade protection device and possibly distorted rack for the upper blade guide (covered below).?

I contacted Felder and they sent a service tech out to perform a quick on-site inspection a few days after delivery. We put together a replacement parts list to cover anything damaged in transit. I was told that our replacement parts would arrive within the next 4 weeks. More than 60 days later I still don¡¯t have any updated schedule for the parts I¡¯ve requested. I¡¯ve had to call or email Felder repeatedly (to little success) in order to get information pertaining to shipping for additional in process orders or replacement parts from the service department.?

I¡¯ve spent multiple weeks attempting to get this bandsaw to re-saw straight without success. The rack for the upper blade guide wasn¡¯t 90 degrees from the table nor was it parallel to the blade. I¡¯ve re-adjusted this component nearly a dozen times (my father and I have rebuilt the saw multiple times) and I¡¯ve never been able to get it closer than 1 degree off 90 for a ~1-2¡± depth of cut and this angle changes by nearly a degree when moving from ~2¡± to 20¡± making the bandsaw useless for wide re-saw which is one of my intended use cases. I also feel a concerning amount of play within the gear mechanism so I¡¯m starting to suspect this issue might be a defect somehow introduced during manufacturing. It¡¯s really too bad since I bought a Hammer A3-41 planer / thicknesser combination machine earlier this year and I love it (awesome machine with zero problems).?

I¡¯m starting to find Felder¡¯s service department disappointing since I asked them what the proper torque values are for the two M6 bolts which control the rack adjustment within the upper frame -- I was given the following response: ¡°good and tight but not too much¡±.

Really??

I¡¯ve verified that the upper and lower wheels are coplanar (they are -- although this shouldn¡¯t matter) and my 3/8¡± blade is tracking the center of both wheels. I¡¯m at the point where I think I should just request a replacement since I¡¯ve been stuck without a functional bandsaw for the last 3 months and Felder hasn't been terribly motivated to resolve the issues we¡¯ve encountered with this machine. Any advice is greatly appreciated and I apologize for the rant.

Owning a Felder is like owning a BMW. It¡¯s cool, and when things are working, performance is better than your run-of-the-mill Toyota, with a price tag to match. ?With headquarters and the major parts warehouse being 10,000 miles away, God help you if you need tech support or service anytime soon.

?

Waiting weeks or months for saw blades and other critical components, not to mention new machines, is insane. I¡¯m not sure if Felder needs a bigger factory in Austria or if they need a bigger warehouse in DE, but something needs to change.

I used a steel-chassis self-retracting reel when I upgraded the electrical cord system on my Barth workbench. ?I was delightfully surprised when I received it to see how heavily it was built. ?I would certainly call this ¡°industrial grade¡± and can recommend it. ??It¡¯s a Strongly 49581, and I bought it from Northern Tool. ? It¡¯s also available from Amazon now: ?? ?It is very heavy duty, weighs probably 20 pounds. ? The cheaper versions of this type of reel are all junky IMO, but this one is definitely industrial duty and probably overkill for this application. ?In this application, this is to?connect to the supply voltage rather than the conventional use as an extension cord, so I replaced the female end with a conventional male plug.

Hello All,

Need to replace both of the ceiling mounted self retracting air and electric reels for my home shop. Previous units were inexpensive Northern Tool type that had iffy retraction, but worked reasonably well.

The air hose finally stopped retracting completely, but was the type that always required me manually moving it left and right to keep it from binding on the housing.
The electric reel had the same problems, as well as eventually frying the flimsy friction fit sliding brass electrical connection that allowed it to spin (found this accidentally when I took it down to fool with poor retraction).

Trying to find units that self align when retracting and do it reliably, as well as proper electrical connections that won't burn up in moderate use.

Seems like open reel units make more sense than the plastic enclosed ones.

Very moderate use - single user. Electrical demands are for shop hand tools (festool, makita, etc.)

Looking at "Coxreel" online - American made - a little pricey.
Goodyear air hose sounds good, but has mixed reviews and is actually from China. They claim it works reliably in auto repair shops - hose may be too thick and stiff for nail guns.

Looking for input from others about units that work reliably.

Thanx,

Clark

Re: Whitehill tooling

David,
I¡¯ve just checked the Whitehill website and all varieties of the combi head are showing as in stock.
Jon

Re: Whitehill tooling

David,
I also ordered the combi-head in Nov and received it within the week (I¡¯m Uk based). I also contacted them just before Xmas for some custom cutters and was told 5 working days so they appear to be operating normally.

Re: Whitehill tooling

Hi David
I ordered a combi head from Whitehill October 28th and received it November 20th. That included having a custom profile cutter limiter set made. I didn¡¯t use their website, just did it via email. They were very helpful and I love the combi head.
Eric?

Whitehill tooling

Was looking at ordering a combi head from Whitehill and during check out it said delivery would be Jul-Nov 2021. Seven to elven months seems a bit excessive even given the pandemic slowing things down. Has anyone ordered from them since the start of the pandemic? What would be a realistic time to get the order?

Yes I sent a email to them asking if the shipping time was accurate but haven't heard back yet.?

If the cage breaks, the balls can go one direction but hang up in the other.? If bearings aren't seated correctly, they can go bad pretty quickly.? Don't ask how i know this.? Dave

Thanks guys, that was my first thought as well, so I asked them for advice on checking bearings. But then it just stopped spinning altogether in one direction and still spins in the other direction. I¡¯ve never heard of a bad bearing acting that way, but I may be wrong about that. I was initially tentative in disassembling the machine until I got permission from them, in case I was going to void my warranty. But since they gave me the go ahead, I may as well pull the fan and motor off, take it apart, and check the bearings.

Well, my experiment with a Harvey G700 was great while it lasted. It lasted 3 months. It started squealing a few weeks back, so I called them up and had a tech on the phone in 2 minutes (wasn't expecting that!). He hadn't seen that issue before, so I emailed him a video of the sound. He passed it around the tech department and they asked me to disassemble and see if there was anything wound around the impeller or lodged in the machine somewhere. All clear. Then after a few more days, the fan just wouldn't spin. I opened it back up, and I can spin it in reverse, though it sounds rough. When I try to spin it in the correct direction, it just won't go. I'm assuming bad motor. I've emailed them back and forth for three weeks now, and I get a response maybe once a week, saying they're still trying to figure out a solution. If they send me a new motor, I'm happy to put it in. If they send me a new machine, I'm happy to send them back the lemon. If they send me a refund, I'm happy to move on with my life. I already had to buy a new dust collector to keep me going over the past few weeks, and it's doing what I need it to do. So, I'm afraid I need to backtrack on my previous recommendations?regarding Harvey dust processors. I hope I'm the only one who is having trouble with them!

It¡¯s actually pretty common for bearings to do exactly that, spin one way and lock up the other.
